Winter Checklist
Thinking about college? Follow these steps:
- Keep working hard in your classes to maintain a solid grade point average.
- Get familiar with financial aid terms, such as FAFSA, FSA ID, the College PROFILE, scholarships, grants, federal and private loans.
- Start developing a resume: a record of your accomplishments, activities, and work experience.
- If you haven't participated in many activities outside of class, now is the time to sign up. Consider clubs at school, team sports, leadership roles, involvement in a religious or civic community group.
- Explore colleges that interest you and check entrance requirements.
- Begin to prepare for the ACT or SAT. Plan to take at least one of these tests in the spring. Ask your counselor if you qualify for a fee waiver.
- Complete community service hours and submit your form.
What Colleges Look For in a High School Student
Some of the more common factors considered—in no particular order—are:
- Difficulty of your high school courses
- Grades in college prep courses
- Cumulative Grade Point Average
- Admission test scores
- Essays
- Letters of Recommendation
- Counselor Recommendation
- Extracurricular activities
- Class Rank
You also have a say in the process! Think about what matters to you and pick a college that is a good fit.
