The Big Library Read
The BLR is an awesome simultaneous reading opportunity for HS students!
One way to bring your students together during this time is with the next Big Library Read, which started one week early. Previously, the next global ebook club was going to start on Monday, March 30. But in light of everything happening with COVID-19, and knowing your users are turning to your OverDrive site, BLR has started (Monday, March 23).
Our global ebook club is an opportunity for readers all around the world to read the same book at the same time without waitlists or holds. From March 23 – April 13, comedian Michael McCreary’s memoir Funny, You Don’t Look Autistic will be available in both ebook and audiobook formats.

Who: Maureen Squier
What: Secondary Librarian
Where: Maple Hill MS & HS (Schodack CSD)
What book would you recommend: The Book Thief is one of my favorites; anything by Ruta Sepetys; for adult books, I really like Amor Towles.
Share something that you are proud of that has recently happened in your library/school: this is my fourth year at Schodack, and I finally have a comprehensive research project at every grade level (7-12). Also, my circulation is up over the past several years. I am proud of the library program that we are building at Maple Hill. Another event I'm also really proud of is the 2nd Annual Peeps Diorama Contest that we will be doing this year. Because of the COVID-19 closure, we will be switching it to a virtual contest, but it was a lot of fun last year!
What drew you to a career in school librarianship: When I was a high school senior, I had a meeting with my local public librarian about studying to be a librarian. I never went back for my graduate degree, life intervened, and I stayed at home with my three children. After my youngest went to school, I started to think about what I wanted to do when I grew up, and it always came back to libraries. School libraries seemed to combine my love of libraries and learning with my love of helping out in my childrens' classrooms. At the time, we could only afford either a new minivan or a grad degree - I think I've gotten way more return out of my career as a school librarian than I would have from a minivan!
