The Freshman Focus
November 30, 2015
Ben Davis Ninth Grade Center
Principal's Corner
The Ninth Grade Center staff coordinated a great event before Thanksgiving Break to help sponsor our student activities and recognition fund. The Staff vs. Student Volleyball game featured our Freshman Girls Volleyball team and our freshmen boys from each academy playing against staff volunteers and provided an exciting and entertaining event for everyone! Our technology assistant Brad Perdue was the DJ for the event. In addition to the game the students listened to their favorite music and participated in halftime contests. As always these events are a success because of the great young people who attend and enjoy this special opportunity. A great time was had by all and the money that was raised will sponsor our school recognition events such as academy recognitions, the Straight A Luncheon, and Top 100 Breakfast in addition to reducing the cost for students’ college visit field trips. On the Friday before spring break we will hold our annual Staff vs. Student Basketball game which will sponsor our PTO and student activities fund for the 2nd semester.
Student mid-terms were distributed Monday, November 30th during Impact period. Be sure to ask your child for their mid-term and review their current grades. If you would like specific information regarding their class grades you can access that through your Skyward account or have your child log in to their own Skyward account to view this information online.
Please take the time to support your child by reinforcing their highest effort these last three weeks of the semester. Our goal is for every student to earn all of their credits this semester. Most students have the opportunity to earn 8 or 9 credits if they pass all of their classes! Study habits are an evolving skill for freshmen students and really need to be emphasized as we move into final exam review the last two weeks of the semester. We will continue to host study tables after school Monday-Thursday each week from 3:30 - 5:00pm. Supper will be available and late buses will be here on these afternoons to transport students home. Please make sure a ride is here to pick up your child at 5:00pm if they will not be using our buses. Thank you for your support!

Information on Weather Delays
Already the thermometer has indicated that winter is upon us. As the season progresses we may face the prospect of having to delay or cancel school on a particular day because of snow, ice or other poor weather conditions. I’d like to remind you of some of the key procedures we follow to communicate with our families on these days to keep our students safe.
If school is delayed or cancelled, we will communicate this in the following ways: on local television and radio stations and their websites; on our district website, www.wayne.k12.in.us; through an automated phone call from our superintendent’s office; through Twitter; and on our district Facebook page, which you can access and “like” through our website.
If school is delayed, child care at our Wayne Township Preschool will open on time. If we close school for the day, regardless of whether we bring staff in or not, we will close child care at Wayne Township Preschool as well.
If we announce a delay, that will mean a two-hour delay. This means if your student takes the bus, you can expect his or her pick-up time to be approximately two hours later than normal. Since our pick-up times can vary somewhat during delays, it’s always a good idea to encourage your student to dress warmly in case his or her wait at the bus stop is a little longer than normal.
I appreciate your help in keeping our students safe and healthy during the upcoming winter months.
