What is water pollution

Water pollution is the pollution in water bodies ( e.g Lakes and Rivers ). Water pollution occurs when pollutants ( chemical or substances that make water polluted ) are discharged into water bodies without enough treatment to get rid of the harmful compounds in it. Pollutants get into water mostly because of human reasons. Did you know that water covers 70% of the earth? Making it very important to humans and the environment.

How it affects us

One of the biggest dangers to human health is the pollution in water. People can't survive without water. If their water resources are polluted they could become sick. Different types of pollution affect humans in different ways. Organisms that cause the diseases are called pathogens, which include bacteria and viruses. Pathogens make humans very sick. The most common illnesses caused by pathogens are : Typhoid ( a fever that causes Diarrhoea and rashes.) , Cholera ( A infection in the small intestine that causes a large amount of Diarrhoea) , Dysentery ( A infection in the intestines causing Diarrhoea with blood or mucous) ,Polio ( a viral disease that effects your nerves and can cause you to be paralyzed.) and Hepatitis ( A liver infection that can cause swelling ). These are particularly dangerous for children. It adds up to 60% of childhood deaths across the world.

A scientific solution

Though this is one of the biggest dangers to humans. There is a solution! Water purification tablets have been made to purify water! Water purification tablets kill the pathogens in water making it safe for humans to drink. The tablets are mostly used by backpackers to purify their water supply from streams and rivers. The ingredients that are used it the tablets is chlorine, chlorine dioxide or even iodine. Those chemicals deactivate the bacteria and viruses in the water making it safe for human consumption.

USE

There are specific things you have to do with the tablet for it to work effectively. One or more tablets are dissolved in a container of water. The container has to be closed and must sit for 30 minutes for it to work effectively. Some of the types of tablets leave a bad taste in the water. Yet Iodine neutralizer tablets can be used to take away idolizes flavour. The chlorine flavour can be removed by letting the treated water sit uncovered so that the chlorine can evaporate, leaving the water to taste fine.

Water purification tablets have made a positive affect on the society. Making it safe for humans to drink water!
