Elsie Rogers Students Present at P-H-M Board Meeting

On the evening of January 11, Emma T. and Collin S. joined Mrs. Campbell at the Educational Services Center for the bimonthly School Board meeting. The focus of their presentation part was the fifth grade, Bee a Super Buddy, campaign which is an initiative the 5th grade students have been working on for the past several months. The goal of the campaign is to promote kindness around Elsie Rogers School. They shared with board members how their idea came about and a time line of campaign events. We are so proud of how they represented Elsie Rogers.

Learning Sphere

We are excited to announce the 2015-16 Learning Sphere is just around the corner! Shortly families will be receiving an interest form for participation. We encourage your family to consider participating. It is a great way to spend some time together investigating something that is of interest to your student. This year our open house will be on Wednesday evening, February 24. ALL Elsie Rogers families are invited to stop by whether you complete a project or not. Ethos Science Center will once again be bringing their science bus and indoor planetarium back to Elsie Rogers. Healthworks will participate offering several hands on activities, WSBT will offer a weather station, Penn High School students will be leading students in several activities, computers will be set up for Coding plus much more! We hope to see you there.

Preparing Your Child for Spring 2016 ISTEP

The Department of Education has made available an option for families to engage in ISTEP+ preparation for the spring 2016 assessment. If you go to the Elsie Rogers website and click on the "Resource" tab you will see a link labeled, Preparing your Child... We encourage you to utilize these free resources as a jump start for your child in this state mandated assessment.

Box Top News

Congratulations to Katie H. and Kydin H. They each turned in the most Box Tops this past Fall. Each child is the recipient of a Dairy Queen gift card. Congratulations are also in order to Mrs. Martinczak's 3rd grade class as they submitted the most Box Tops as a class. They will celebrate with a Popsicle party (once it warms up!) We encourage families to continue saving and turning in Box Tops as Elsie Rogers earned over $1,000 for our participation. A heart felt thanks goes out to Tuesday Hickey for preparing all of the labels for mailing and to all families for collecting.

Young Author's Conference

Calling all young authors and their parents! P-H-M’s annual Young Author’s Conference will take place Saturday, March 12—and you won’t want to miss it. The morning program will be full of engaging activities, fun entertainment and creative challenges—along with opportunities to learn and share. We are pleased to host guest author Laura Purdie Salas. Salas will be on hand to share her published work and her love of writing, and to encourage students to produce their own poems and stories.

Get ideas! Parents will hear from Kathy Higgs-Coulthard, the director of Michiana’s Writing Center and also an instructor at St. Mary’s College. Higgs-Coulthard supports writers and writing events in the community, and will share tips with parents on how to do the same in their own families.

Get inspired! Students will share their own written work with other students in small groups, getting feedback and giving encouragement and gaining confidence in their ability to create.

Get the giggles! The Roz Puppets will be sure to make you laugh. Big puppets with big personalities, their performances delight “children of all ages.”

Winter Weather

With January comes the possibility of snow and inclement weather. Children are expected to go outside for recess (temperature permitting) so please make sure they are dressed appropriately (heavy coats, hats, gloves) and that you have labeled all attire. In order for students to play in the snow, they must wear boots and snow pants. Otherwise they will be asked to stay on the blacktop. If school is cancelled, P-H-M has built in one snow day and no eLearning is required. Upon the second snow day being called, all K-5 students will need to complete the day one eLearning activities posted online. You should have received information from your student's teacher regarding log in, etc. A link to the lessons can be found on the Elsie Rogers home page (see bottom of newsletter for a direct link). Feel free to email your student's teacher anytime throughout the day if questions arise.
