Autism Awareness
By Cassie Doemling and Carina McCallum
What is Autism?
Autism is a disability. It is still unknown what causes autism in children and adults. This year was the eighth annual Autism Awareness Day. April is Autism Awareness month, but Autism Awareness day is April 2nd. We celebrate autism awareness to help raise money for the people who have autism. This money can be used toward research to help people diagnosed with autism.
What are the symptoms of Autism?
Symptoms of autism can be very different from person to person. However, individuals diagnosed with autism may have social challenges, communication difficulties, and repetitive behaviors.
Does Autism affect more people in some places than others?
Do you think autism affects people in different places? Well it does. One of the places with the most autism according to a website is China with a rate of 16.9% of the population. Another place according to the website is Germany with a rate of 1.9% of the population. Finally, one other place is Denmark according to the website is 68 cases per 10,000 people. There is a lot of autism in some places, but not very much in others.
History of Autism
According to “Insider Monkey” autism goes back to the 16th century. But according to “WebMD” the name has been used for over one hundred years. The word autism is from the Greek word autos which means self. Eugen Bleuler, a swiss psychiatrist was one of the first people to start using the term autism in 1911. In the 1940’s researchers in the United States began to use the term autism to describe children with emotional and social challenges. Autism is one of the fastest-growing developmental disorders in the U.S.
Who has Autism?
According to “ Facts about Autism” Boys are five times more likely to get autism than girls. Most children are diagnosed with autism when they are in their first three years of life. Also according to “Facts About Autism” it affects 1 in 68 children and 1 in 42 boys.
Autism Awareness and Support
There are many ways to raise autism awareness and generate support for this disability. One way to increase autism awareness is to wear blue on Autism Awareness Day and during the month of April. You can also donate to an autism charity, school, or organization near you. You can help all around the world.

Rubik's Cubes
By Katherine Harries
Ah, rubik’s cubes, those things you see and want, but when you finally get one you find out it’s so hard to solve! I had an interview with Mrs. Dweck. She was very helpful with my article. In her room she has a giant card-board box with lots of Rubik’s cubes! She got them from you can do the cube, a non-profit organization that gives you rubik’s cubes. The biggest one is a 17 by 17 ! They are coming out with a 22-22 I googled a picture of it. I recommend you look it up too.
How to do the multi-color cross a.k.a.checkerboard. You have a solved cube. All the way on the right turn twice. Then do the same on the far left. Next on the top turn twice. Then do the same on the bottom. Then turn the rubik’s cube to a side that does not look like it is already checker-boarded. That side should look like it has a minus on it. Then all the way on the right turn up. Then do the same on the left. Then you have completed the checkerboard / multi-color cross.
The Rubik’s cube contest.
Our school is having a Rubik’s Cube contest.
Anyone can be in it. To do it you need to go to our school website and sign up. There is still time to sign up! The contest is in June, so sign up soon.
The contest will be June 7th. Look for more info. soon!

April Is Poetry Month
Types Of Poetry
By Hailie Heller, Logan Kuder, and Colin Holden
What do you think about poetry?
Poetry is a type of story that can rhyme, be soothing, fun, and lots more like free verse. Free verse means no rules.
Editor's Note:
Below I provided downloadable slideshows (in PDF format) of a couple of poetry units. Here is a link to a website that has both embedded in it. You would need to be logged into an East Penn Google account in order to access and view the presentations. The advantage of clicking on this link is that the slideshows would be interactive, with videos, audio, and links throughout. Styles of Poetry
April Showers Bring May Flowers Saying
By. Jackson Holden
Is the saying April showers bring May flowers true? The science to back this up is that when flowers in May bloom it is because of all the rain from April. The science to "refute" this is if they bloom in April and there wasn’t a shower yet.Jet streams hold all the precipitation. Then in spring all the precipitation is let out and the jet streams hold the winter breeze. Specifically, for Chicago, April is the rainiest month, with 12.6 days of precipitation, followed closely by March, with 12.4 days of rain.
Snow in April
By Vanessa Owusu-Anim
On April 11, 2016, did you see the remarkable snow?
Everyone was so shocked. The snow barely touched the ground in the morning. As the day passed, the snow kept on coming and finally stuck to the ground. Some people were mad that they had to shovel out the snow.
My family and a student from the family, weren’t that mad. All a student’s dad did was put salt on the floor. A student was mad because she thought they would not go to school on Monday to start the PSSA’s, so it would be moved to the next day,Tuesday.
There has been snow in April before, in 2014. Are you wondering if there was a snowstorm, or a blizzard? Well, let's find out. According to the “Washington Post,” there has been snow during the month of April in the 70’s and 80’s. This has been in Washington D.C.

Origin of Legos
By: Matthew Grossi and Samay Suratwala
Ole Kirk Christiansen invented legos in 1932. Lego is the great Danish company that he founded. Lego is more famous than Hasbro and Barbie Doll. Did you know that the first legos were made out of wood? This was because Ole Kirk Christiansen was a carpenter.
Soon, his wife died. And he had to raise his son: Godtfred Kirk Christiansen.
In 1947, Lego expanded to begin producing plastic toys. Do you know how the company got the name “Lego?” Well, Ole Kirk Christiansen made a contest about what the name should be. It was among his staff. A bottle of homemade wine was the prize. “Legio” or “Lego?” Later on, “Lego” was the chosen name. The name “Lego” derived from the danish phrase leg godt, which means “Play well.” Both names were latin.
Godtfred helped Ole, his father, with their company. They were working very good, until one day, when the factory burned down. It took days, even weeks to build the factory back to normal. Then, they were off again.
Lego has gained great popularity over the years worldwide and shows great representation of products among children and adults. It is widely used in the school’s curriculum to teach children about creativity, imagination, constructing, arithmetic, science, computer coding or robotics, story building, and much more. Recently I read about a Romanian teenager who built a Lego car powered by air. This car can actually work like the real car but at a very low speed.
What makes Lego’s block so unique and special? Lego pieces of all varieties constitute a universal system. Despite difference in the design over the years, each piece remains compatible in some way with the current existing pieces. So the Lego bricks from 1958 still interlock with those made in the current time, and Lego sets for young children are compatible with those made for much older kids.
During my research I learned that each Lego piece is manufactured to an exacting degree of precision. When two pieces are engaged they must fit firmly, yet be easily disassembled. The machines that manufacture Lego bricks have tolerances as small as 10 micrometres.
Legos bring everything to life so keep using your creativity and imagination to build a masterpiece.

Parent teacher conferences
By Kya Vandersluis
It’s that time of year your stomach feels queasy you are terrified, you do not know what they are talking about. It could be good or bad.
A parent teacher conference is where teachers discuss children's progress in school or how they can reasonably help the children make progress.
I interviewed Everly from newspaper club.
“How do you feel about parent teacher conferences?” I asked, She responded “ I feel nervous that I will get all F’s.”
“Are you relieved when you get good news?” I asked.
She responded, “ Yes, and I get ICECREAM!”
There are some likes about the Parent Teacher Conferences, like kid’s love the book fair, early dismissal, and maybe extra recess. Teachers, on the other hand, love when there students buy them some books for the classroom.
All though there are good things there are always downsides, such as teachers do not like shorter days, because they cannot complete their lesson plans. Teachers get nervous when they have to tell parents that their children are doing bad in school or they misbehave.
Weather you feel uneasy or confident remember teachers share the same feelings as well.
No Homework???????????
By Aryel Amoros & Farha Hossain
Why don’t 3-8 have no homework? 3-8 have no homework because it is PSSA week . We have no homework, because we do so much work, it could not be good for us . Cooper Harries says, "Homework is bad for you." Cooper Harries said, "If you are in higher grades you should get less homework. If you are in lower grades you should get a lot of easy homework." You should do your homework for about 10 min. What If we had no homework?

Advice About Field Trips
By: Alexis Schoonover and Garrett Longbons
Do you know what to bring to a field trip? Or how to act at a field trip? Do you know what to expect at a field trip? Who to sit with? Or how to get the best of them? Well here are the answers.
When you go on a field trip you should always know what the weather is. If you know what the weather is going to be the day of the field trip then you can limit down the following items.
Bring a draw string bag to hold all of the items that you bring on the trip and it is easy to carry. Just in case it is rainy outside or the weather was predicted to be rainy then you should bring a raincoat. If you plan on taking pictures then bring a camera in a zip-lock just in case the field trip is near a lake or again if it is rainy. Bring a lunch in a brown paper bag so that you can just throw it all away when you are done. Wear a pair of comfortable shoes preferably sneakers. A change of clothes in case you get wet on the field trip. Bring souvenir money in case their is a store for you to buy souvenirs from the trip, and make sure that it is okay with your teacher first.
When you are on a field trip you should know how to act. Act respectfully and responsibly at all times. Listen when someone is speaking to your class or group. You should listen to all directions that you are given before you act. Only do as you're told because what you want to do may be very wrong. Do not yell unless you are told to by an adult.
When you are on a field trip you should have a rough idea of what to expect because you know what the trip is. If you are going to planetarium you should know that you are going to learn about our solar system and other solar systems and that you are not going to learn about lions.
Normally you get to choose who to sit with. Sometimes if your teacher knows that you don’t behave well then your teacher will assign you with someone that you may not like but at least you don’t get in trouble with them. If you get to choose you should sit with a good friend. Do not sit with someone that might or does get you in trouble. Don’t sit with someone who dares you to lick your shoe or scream on the bus or other bad things that will get you in trouble.
Most kids want to get the best of the field trip or are getting the best of it without even trying. If you don’t know how to get the best of a field trip then you should most certainly read this part. Just have fun and enjoy yourself. Follow all rules before you act. Try the optional things that you can do. Do everything that sounds cool or interesting to you if you have an option.
My Trip to PPL
By: Everly Sirianni
Do you know where the Phantoms games are and where Disney on Ice is held? Well, they’re held at the PPL Center. The PPL Center has all kinds of cool shows! Can you imagine how much power is used in that building, like a thousand !
Recently, I visited my dad’s job at a PPL Data Center in Upper Macungie. There was a lot of networking stuff there! I got to see how they run electricity all over the city. If I wanted to I could turn your electricity off .
HAC (Heat Aisle Containment)
When I went to my dad’s work I saw a HAC a place where they put all the weirs so they can have power and so they can work. I went inside it. It was as creepy as a haunted house. It was pitch black. I thought I was getting sick because there was hot and cold air going side to side.It was weird. My brother was scared , he kept saying he wanted to leave .
This is where the Phantoms games are as well as Disney On Ice.
Tower Gardens
By Juliana DeDona
Tower Gardens are coming to Willow Lane sooner than you can think. I interviewed Tara Corrado and she is involved with the Tower Gardens at Willow Lane. The school is starting with one Tower Garden and if the the school will buy more of the Tower gardens. Tower gardens might grow better outside because sunlight will help the plants grow faster. The Tower garden would look nice outside in the garden. Everyone will know the Tower gardens are there, and there will be so many people admiring the Tower gardens. If the Tower gardens are inside the teachers would have to check on it.
The Tower gardens might grow better inside. The staff wouldn’t have to walk that far to check on it. There is a lot of space in the school to put Tower gardens. The Tower gardens wouldn't be that far to take off the plants to put in the salad bar.If the staff puts the Tower garden outside bugs will land on the plants more. They can put the Tower gardens near the window where the sunlight can come in the room and help the Tower gardens grow better.
How can Willow lane incorporate the Tower gardens in its curriculum? It's ideal for the classroom setting. Many schools are already used the Tower gardens to encourage students witness first hand hour plants grow, they also learn the importance of sustainability, healthy eating, and growing base to the community.
What is a Tower Garden? It is a vertical tower that grows plants using aeroponics which is growing plants in air or a misting environment without soil. How does it work? It has a 20 gallon tank and you fill it with a special nutrient solution. A pump pushes the nutrient solution up the tower then the solution sprays the plants as it goes down and repeats over and over again. What does it grow? It grows Fruits, Vegetables,Herbs, and Plants for example flowers. However the Tower Garden does not grow apples, potatoes, carrots and more.

Caroline Shutts here reporting alongside Maddie about what it feels like to contribute a winning piece of art in the Art and Photography show.
I interviewed Jocelyn Scheetz. When asked what it felt like to be first place, Jocelyn responded,” It feels great to win first place. I feel so proud!” I then asked Jocelyn if she received a lot of attention. She responded, “Yes, I got attention from my Mom, Dad, brother and a few friends.”
When asked if it was nerve-racking having art in the contest and being judged. Jocelyn replied, ”Yes, it took me a long time to draw them, and I kept on making mistakes, but all the hard work paid off.” My last and final question was simply, did you expect to win? Jocelyn’s response demonstrates her pride in her art. “I didn’t really expect to win first place, but, I knew out of the two pictures I drew, Color Bursts was sure to win something.”
I had a great time at the Art and Photography show and was quite impressed with everyone’s talents. It was a fun and colorful experience. Please be sure to join us next year for some more of the Arts at Willow.

Scholastic Contest Grand Prize Winner: "Ibi's Fireflies"
Below is the speech that Mrs. Komishock prepared to deliver during the Willow Lane Incredible Assembly on May 9th. Instead, she ad-libbed for a more heart-felt, emotional delivery. I wanted to include this text because it provides some information about the judging process.
Good Morning, Willow Lane!
I’d like to thank Principal Moyer for inviting me to your Incredible Assembly today! My name is Mrs. Komishock, and I work for Scholastic Book Fairs. And if I know one thing about Willow Lane Elementary School, I know this: you love to read!
Many of the books that you love are written by authors who started writing when they were your age. Authors and illustrators love to share how they began writing stories and creating drawings to make their stories come to life. So thirty years ago in 1986, Scholastic Book Fairs started the Kids Are Authors program, a nationwide competition to encourage and celebrate the talent and imagination of young writers and illustrators.
Open to grades kindergarten through eighth grade and under the guidance of project advisors, the competition includes both fiction and non-fiction entries and selects one grand prize winner in each category for publication, along with a credit of 5,000 Scholastic Dollars™, redeemable for books, educational resources, and technology through our exclusive catalog. Grand-prize winners will also receive 100 copies of their published book, award certificates, and gold medallions. Honorable mentions will also be awarded to 25 entries.
This year – the final year of our competition – we received over 900 entries. Those 900 entries are judged by authors of books that were on your most recent book fair and books that are probably currently residing on bookshelves in your school right now.
Authors like:
· Jennifer Nielsen who wrote Mark of the Thief;
· Tommy Greenwald, author of the new Crimebiters Series,
· Ed Masessa who wrote Scarecrow Magic;
· Christina Diaz Gonzalez, author of Moving Target
· Illustrator Derek Anderson whose work includes Hotrod Hamster
· Illustrator Matt Myers who illustrated Tyrannosaurus Dad
One of those entries this year was from your school. It was submitted by a group of 10 of your third-grade classmates under the guidance of project advisors Mrs. Dweck and Mr. Weimann. They entered the non-fiction category with a book called Ibi’s Fireflies, an original work of non-fiction inspired by your school’s visit by Ibiyinka Alao of Nigeria, the United Nations International Art Competition Winner and United Nations Ambassador of Art.
Today, it is my distinct honor to let you know that Ibi’s Fireflies by third grade students of Willow Lane Elementary School is the 2016 Kids Are Authors GRAND PRIZE WINNER! Congratulations!
