UPK-12 Information and Updates
Professional Learning Late Arrival Day (11/4/22): On November 4th, students will arrive at school two-hours later than their normal time. This is a day where all staff will participate in professional development activities related to our district’s strategic plan.
Attendance: Attendance is one of the most significant indicators of student success. When students improve their attendance, they improve academically. Being present and on time for school every day is not only an important life skill, but is critical to student academic achievement and engagement. Every reporting period, attendance letters are mailed to families indicating that a child has been absent (regardless if it's an excused or unexcused absence) from school for five or more days. The district is required by NYSED to take daily attendance and also report student attendance to a child’s parents/guardians when he/she is absent from school. New York State defines chronic absenteeism as missing 10% or more of the school days for any reason (excused or unexcused). If there are concerns regarding your child’s/childrens’ attendance, such as an illness related to the pandemic, please contact the appropriate counseling office for support. Thank you! Feel free to check out the resources from Attendance Works.
As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions. Please feel free to call or email us:

UPK-4 Information
Building supportive relationships and partnering with families in children’s education is a rewarding part of any educators’ experience. With that said, our building is open and ready to welcome students to begin their day at 9:05 a.m. Being in school, on-time and ready to learn sets the stage for a successful day. With your assistance and cooperation, please have students dropped off and in the building at 9:05 a.m. That valuable time in the morning allows teachers to begin morning meetings, circles, morning work and valuable instruction. Morning announcements will begin at 9:15 a.m. and we are ready to start a successful day. Students entering after 9:15 a.m. without a note may be marked late or tardy. Additionally, as a regular practice, the school notifies families when a student’s number of absences reaches the five, ten, and fifteen-day mark. On average, a student is absent from school for a total of four days for the entire school year. The school’s Attendance Improvement Team monitors attendance trends for all of our students. Regular attendance at school is an integral part of successful school performance. Of the many factors that determine academic success, regular attendance is one of the most critical. Daily attendance is necessary for students to keep up with assigned work and gain the most from their classroom experience. Studies and research have shown that regular attendance is directly linked to success at school. Absenteeism negatively impacts overall school performance and can also prevent students from reaching their full potential. We care deeply about the success of our students and realize that keeping parents and guardians well informed regarding attendance is important to the success of the students.

National Fire Protection: Since 1922, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has sponsored Fire Prevention Week. This year’s theme for Fire Prevention Week (October 9th-15th, 2022) was, "Fire won't wait. Plan your escape!” On Tuesday, October 12th, members of the Village and East Avon Fire Departments visited Avon Middle School to speak to fifth and sixth grade students about fire prevention at home.

Collaboration: During the month of October, the middle school is focusing on “Collaboration.” Collaboration is an important skill for children to learn at home and school. Collaboration improves the way a team or family works together and problem solves. This leads to more innovation, efficient processes, increased success, improved communication, and achieving short and long term goals. Throughout the month of October, students have focused on various classroom and school wide activities that promote collaboration. Last week as part of spirit week, students in small teams of 8-10 students created and then assembled door decorations for classroom doors located throughout the middle school. The doors pictured below were recognized for their outstanding Avon Pride.

Health and Wellness
Health and Wellness Continued...
Promoting healthy behaviors is rooted in the tradition of the Avon school culture. One of the ongoing issues that all schools are facing today is vaping on school grounds. This has specifically been an issue in school restrooms where students lack regular supervision. Sadly, it is an issue for us as well. We do the best we can to prevent this usage through educational programs and regular bathroom checks by school staff members. However, it is difficult to prevent due to the private nature of restrooms and small size of the many vaping equipment pieces. Increasingly, students have expressed frustration with this use at school and that they are uncomfortable using the restrooms at school.
As a result, we are ramping up our approach to help eliminate vaping on campus. Restrooms will continue to be checked frequently by administration, school resource officers, and other school personnel. If there is reasonable suspicion of vaping, students will be escorted to the main office where additional steps may be merited. If the student is found to be in possession of school-restricted substances or paraphernalia, then consequences will be administered per the Code of Conduct. In all instances, a parent will be contacted regarding the circumstances that took place.
Promoting a safe and healthy learning environment is critical for students to have a high quality educational experience at Avon. A healthy collaboration between students, families, and the district will give us the best chance at success at eliminating this behavior. Further, engaging in this negative behavior may have harmful effects on both academics and extra-curricular achievement. It is absolutely against the Avon School District Code of Conduct to possess vaping paraphernalia or to vape anywhere on campus.
