LMES' Joins Kid Governor Election Race!
Connecticut's Kid Governor program is a state-wide program designed to promote civics standards such as the way that the US government runs and the voting system works. We loved participating in it this year because our 5th-grade students got to show clear communication, citizenship, and critical thinking skills as they developed a platform, gave a speech to the entire 5th-grade class about their cause, and voted for each other in a fair election. This year, Sara Gilchrist (see photo) was elected as the LMES representative. While she did not move on to the final round, she got to give a moving speech and she is a winner in our hearts! Giving Back and Keeping LMES Grounded With A New Record!
Last year, LMES students and staff donated 1,046 pairs of socks that were delivered to St. Vincent DePaul Mission of Waterbury's Homeless Shelter. This year, we "beat the socks off" of last year's record with over 1,300 socks donated! Socks are the most requested item of clothing from homeless shelters, and we at LMES are proud to join this region-wide initiative of displaying global citizenship and positive character traits by giving back to those in need within the local community.
Creating 3D Art!
Last month in art, students worked creatively to build a three-dimensional piece of art using colored paper that was cut, folded, and bent to pop out from the base. The result is a candy-corn kind of unique art!
Having A Ball At The Fall Festival!
This year the preschool and kindergarten classes participated in the annual LMES Fall Festival. This event is a fun time for some developmentally appropriate play and is all thanks to our wonderful group of PTO volunteers, teachers and staff. Thank you for making this event extra special for our students!
Getting Wrapped Up In STEM!
As an engaging way to teach math, students worked in groups to estimate how many squares of toilet paper it would take to wrap a friend. They then carried out the experiment and compared the actual amount to their estimates. What a great way to make learning fun!
Showing Our Learning In Different Ways!
During a recent math lesson, students were asked to look at an arrangement of boxes and figure out the dimensions as well as math facts about them. Here, you see students using hands-on tools as well as visuals to show their thinking and the steps they went through to solve the problem. One of the many ways we make our thinking visible!
