News from Carl Sandburg Junior High

A Note from Mrs. Johansen
I have always loved the holiday time of year at a school. It reminds me of all the good there is in the world. As an example, our Sandburg staff and student community came together to fill the Toys for Tots boxes that were housed in our entryway. What a gift to children all over the area!
Next week, our students will be involved in completing service projects in their classes that will benefit the community and our school. Our students and staff are eager to participate in this day of "giving back" on Wednesday, December 22nd. We are still collecting plastic bags and old t-shirts if you'd like to bring them by the school.
As you saw in my email on Wednesday, we have slightly altered our schedule for the ending of 2nd quarter and beginning of 3rd quarter. We felt it would be better to transition our students into 3rd quarter after winter break.
The timeline is as follows:
December 20-22- remain in 2nd quarter schedule/classes and finish up projects/work
January 10th- return to school and official start of 3rd quarter
January 14th- grades from 2nd quarter are posted in Infinite Campus
Parents and students should check Infinite Campus for any missing assignments or work that needs to be completed.
We are so proud of our students and the transition they have made back to in-person instruction after the varied educational setting over the last year and a half. It has not been an easy task! I applaud our school community with the great gains we've made over the past semester and look forward to starting 2022 off on the right foot!
When students return to classes in January, we will be participating in a school wide reboot of school expectations and procedures. This will support students as they start a new quarter!
This will be my last newsletter of 2021- it's been quite a year! I hope everyone has a restful and safe Winter Break. We look forward to seeing everyone back in 2022!
Be well,
Erika Johansen
Submitting Your Student's Vaccination Card
This documentation is very important during our contact tracing efforts. Families will continue to be notified if a student is identified as a close contact so they are aware to monitor for potential symptoms.
From Sandburg Student Services Team
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, schools are increasing their focus on mental health and well-being. Many schools are working to create a positive social and emotional climate to support students’ social and emotional learning. Starting January of 2022, a child in Illinois between the ages of 7-17 can take up to 5 mental health day's each school year without a doctor’s note.
A parent will still need to call in to report their student absent for the day. On the second mental health day, a Sandburg clinician will be reaching out to the parent to discuss if any support at school is needed. If you have any questions or if your student needs mental health support, please reach out to a Sandburg clinician.
