New This Week

This Week's Lessons

We have come down to the last normal week of lessons in the first semester. Next week's lessons will be scheduled on a make-up basis only.

6th graders will be finalizing their SmartMusic assignments for the semester and will begin working ahead in their book. We will also be talking to some students about trying out the horn and bass clarinet.

7th Graders will be finalizing their SmartMusic and working on their solos. We are now just under a month before Solo & Ensemble!

Current Information from Previous Newsletters

It's Registration Time!

It's hard to believe that registration forms for next year's classes will go out to students this week! Last week, 7th grade students met CHUMS band teachers, Mr. Mesner & Mr. Melrose, and heard about the opportunities in band at Cardinal Heights. 6th graders will be recieving scheduling cards this week. Additionally, all students will get a chance to check out what some of our older musicians are doing at events such as Epoch Sound Night, Band O'Rama, and the Memorial Day Parade Rehearsal.

We would like to encourage your student to continue the journey on his/her instrument in band next year. You quite simply will not find another band program as comprehensive as Sun Prairie's in the state and our staff work hard to provide students with high-quality musical experiences across the board. We know that scheduling can be confusing so please do not hesitate to contact us with questions or problems that you run into in this important process.

Epoch Sound Pep Band Night

"Epoch Sound" is our high school pep band and they have invited us to perform with them at a boys basketball game on Thursday, January 31. We hold a rehearsal, social, and pizza dinner after school on the 31st before taking busses to the High School.

Before break, students received information and a permission form for the event. Signed forms and $5 for pizza are due back to us no later than Friday, January 18. Due to space constraints, this is a hard deadline.

While this event is optional, it will be a great time and a fantastic opportunity for students to use their musical skills to support the athletic program and to interact with some older musicians who were once in their shoes. Look for a permission form to come home this week!

Parent Band is Coming Soon!

6th Graders will begin reviewing everything that they have been learning over the past few months during band rehearsals. As a check on comprehension, students will be asked to show someone at home they trust how to assemble their instrument and how to make a basic sound on the mouthpiece. Over the next few weeks, students should also be showing that person how to play a few notes on their instrument and how to read basic music notation.

The culmination of this activity will be a parent band made up of parents and other family members for the winter concert. Both 6th & 7th grade families are welcome to participate and music will be sent home over the next few weeks and there will be one rehearsal at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, February 12. This group is always a BLAST and we encourage you to consider joining us for this year's Parent Band!

SPBB Fish Fry: Friday, January 18

In conjunction with the Knights of Columbus the Sun Prairie Band Boosters will be hosting our Third Annual Fish Fry at the Round Table in Sun Prairie on Friday, January 18. The first two years were a hit-we almost broke their serving record! More importantly, we raised over $3,000 towards supporting students in Sun Prairie Bands. We are looking forward to seeing you out again this year!

More information (as well as how you can help!) can be found here:

Volunteer for Solo & Ensemble

Patrick Marsh Middle School will be hosting the WSMA Solo & Ensemble Festival on Saturday, February 9th. This event brings together music students from the entire school district as well as the surrounding communities with over 400 events scheduled throughout the day. Needless to say, we are always in need of some extra help! If you would be willing to donate your time or food items to help the event run smoothly, we would gladly appreciate it. You can sign up by using this link: goo.gl/y6NaL5

Paper volunteer forms are also available upon request. Please fill out one and return it to your student’s music teacher. Please contact volunteer coordinator, Rachel Zarzyski, at razarzy@sunprairieschools.org or concessions coordinator, Sharon Haraldson at smharal@sunprairieschools.org with any questions.
