Willie Brown Elementary News

August 18, 2017

We had a wonderful 1st few days of school at WBE! It was so good to see happy kids, parents, and staff. As we start settling into our routines, please actively look for ways to become involved in our school community. We have a very active PTA, and lots of opportunities for parents to volunteer during and outside of the school day.

Summer Reading Log Reminder

The WBE PTA provided a summer reading log before our students left for summer break. To receive a prize for completing the required reading, the completed logs are due to WBE no later than Wednesday, 9/23.

Solar Eclipse Monday

As you may be aware, a solar eclipse will take place on Monday, August 21, 2017 during the middle of the day. On that day, the moon will pass between the sun and the earth. The moon will, therefore, cast its shadow on the earth. There are some dangers and precautions that everyone needs to heed. As parents/guardians, we need your assistance to help protect the eyesight of our students and your children. NASA has provided some excellent viewing safety information on their website: https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/safety

· Do not look at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun through an unfiltered camera, telescope, binoculars, or other optical device.

· Similarly, do not look at the sun through a camera, a telescope, binoculars, or any other optical device while using your eclipse glasses or hand-held solar viewer — the concentrated solar rays will damage the filter and enter your eye(s), causing serious injury.”

· Homemade filters or ordinary sunglasses, even very dark ones, are not safe for looking at the sun; they transmit thousands of times too much sunlight.

WBE will NOT be taking students outdoors during the time of the eclipse so that we can keep our students safe.
