The Population
The population for the South was 9 million. 3.5 million were slaves. The South had 11 states.
5 Causes Of The Civil War
Slavery and taxes
Slavery: North- most of the people opposed slavery and they felt that it was immoral. Others did not want to have to compete for wages against an unpaid slave. South- The people feared that the loss of slavery would bankrupt the south. They had a economic dependency on it. Taxes: North- they wanted high taxes on foreign goods- North made their own goods. South- wanted lower taxes on foreign goods- South bought goods overseas instead of from the north.... cheaper to buy goods by sea.
Cultural and rights
Cultural: North- Industry, more educated South- Farmers, less educated Rights: North- Federal rights- federal government should have more control on the states. South- States rights- idea that the states have the right to limit the power of the federal government.
Economic
North- was based more on industry than agriculture. They were purchasing the raw cotton and turning it into finished goods. South- They invented the cotton gin in 1793, cotton became very profitable. This machine was able to reduce the time it took to separate the seeds from the cotton. this made the south one-crop economy.
Army Related
How many men fought in the war for North and South
South- They had 1.5 million people in the army.
