Setting Up Computer for Shabbat and Yom Tov

We’ve been wrestling with how to handle the issue of Shabbat. We don’t want to encourage people to use electronic devices on Shabbat. We want to minimize any potential violations of Shabbat for those who seek to participate. With this in mind, please download the Zoom app (for phones or tablets) and the siddur (and print out) before Shabbat.

Neither logging in for Friday night services before Shabbat, nor leaving the Zoom on, is a problem regarding observance of Shabbat. As host, we have set up streaming so the same room will remain active through the morning service. This means your household can join services Friday night and remain on through the morning service. It is possible to set a computer, phone or tablet to “stay awake” over Shabbat (see below). However, if you are doing this, it is key that you log in from a room in your house where activities and noise will not be a disruption to others.

How to have your computer/tablet not turn off over Shabbat:

  1. Make sure it is plugged into power.
  2. For iPhone/iPad, in settings, under display and brightness, set auto-lock to never.
  3. For PC, click here.
  4. For Mac, in Control Panel, under “Desktop and Screensaver,” change “Start After” to "Never."

Virtual Service Login Instructions

Computer Video Instructions:

Click the link associated with each class above. This should launch the video call. Click "Open Zoom Meeting" to join the class.

If this does not work, please follow the instructions below.

  1. Visit https://zoom.us/home?zcid=2478. You can create a free account if you'd like by clicking "Sign Up, It's Free," but this is not required.
  2. At the top right, click "Join A Meeting."
  3. Enter the Meeting ID (see above).
  4. You will then have the option to turn on/off your microphone and video camera.

Phone and Tablet Video Instructions:

  1. If you do not have the Zoom app on your phone or tablet, visit the App Store and download the app. The app is called ZOOM Cloud Meetings.
  2. Open the app and click "Join a Meeting." You can also click the zoom link above and you will see a prompt to open the meeting in the Zoom app.
  3. Enter the Meeting ID (see above).
  4. You will then have the option to turn on/off your microphone and video camera.

Siddur Instructions

If you do not have a siddur at home, please download the siddurs listed. There is one for Friday night and one for Saturday, both are the Siddur Lev Shalem.

We are also including the Torah and Haftarah readings.

For those who are following more stringent with their Shabbat observance, please print the siddur and Torah readings rather than use it online. We will not be screen sharing the siddur on Shabbat and holidays.

We urge you all to use your own siddur for services which can be purchased from the Rabbinical Assembly at 40% off (click here) or you can download these documents and print them.
