Message from the Principal
I am excited about several things we will be doing this year at Page to help our children grow. A few of those things include our All About Reading program that focuses on phonics development. Next week, we will be starting Innovation Station when students go to their computer lab time. Innovation Station focuses on science and literacy as students truly become engineers. We will also be 1:1 with Chromebooks in the coming weeks! All of our first grade classes are now 1:1 with Chromebooks and our Kindergarten students will be by the end of this month. With being 1:1, this means all students have access to a Chromebook when needed for educational activities.
Thank you for entrusting your child with us and look forward to working with all of our families this year.

Kindergarten Update
1st Grade Update
We have had a wonderful start of the year in first grade! We have focused on learning our classroom rules and procedures while creating a fun, nurturing learning community. During the month of September, you will see a focus on friendship and citizenship. We will learn what it is to be a good friend. In science, we will focus on scientist and using our five senses. During math, we will be learning all about our numbers to 30. We look forward to a GROOVY September!
Media Center News
Hello Page Primary community! My name is Sherry Kubbs and I am thrilled to be your school librarian! We are off to a wonderful start in the library as we have been discussing our four library rules, we call them our “READ Rules”.
R Respect the library materials
E Everything has a correct place
A Always Share
D Do Unto Others As You Would Have Them Do Unto You (The Golden Rule)
We have been specifically focusing on our “READ Rule” of Respect the library materials. Please help your child to display this rule by being responsible and taking care of their library book. The backpack is the safest place to house their book when it is not in use. If the book is lost or severely damaged, it will need to be replaced, which comes at a cost. Encourage your child to keep their library book away from pets, younger children, and liquids and food. Water damage is by far the most common damage I see, and it is often caused by their water bottle leaking onto their library book. Unfortunately there is nothing I can do when a book has water damage, as books will mold, especially along the spine. Requesting for caregivers to pay for books in one of my most difficult responsibilities.
However, one of my favorite responsibilities is instilling a love of reading in your child! When your child brings home their library book, please explore, read and discuss it with them. Modeling reading is one of the most important things you can do to help with your child’s reading development. I look forward to partnering with you and your child’s teacher to make their reading journey a success!
One final note… please mark your calendars as we will have our Fall Book Fair the week of October 7th-11th. Be on the lookout for more information on this exciting event!

Guidance Corner
Welcome back! I am the School Counselor, Ms. Warren. Please feel free to reach out to me any time during the year via email and/ or phone.
If you are interested in becoming a parent volunteer or mentor, please contact me to talk about orientation and/or training. You can also attend training by looking at the Gaston County Schools calendar and choosing a training date there. We would LOVE to fill our school with mentors, so please contact Ms. Warren if interested.
Did you know that we have a Weekend BackPack Program? If your child is in need of
quick, healthy, easy snacks for the weekends and long breaks from school, we are able to help with that. Please contact Ms. Warren if interested. This begins the last week in September.
I am currently taking referrals for Session 1 of my Counseling Groups. Topics include:
Social Skill Development
Loss and Grief
Changing Families (including children involved in divorce, non traditional families, being raised by step parents, aunts and uncles, grandparents, etc).
Stress and anxiety
If you have a student who would benefit from one of these groups, please contact Ms. Warren. Groups will be starting end of September/beginning of October
Guidance classes this month will start with introducing the school counselor and my role here at Page. We are filling out needs assessments with 1st grade classes so that I can run a better counseling program. I am happy to share a copy if you would like, just let me know. We are talking about the topics we cover all year as well as behavior expectations and classroom procedures.
I will be introducing the character trait of "Respect" and how to respect each other, our differences, and ourselves.
In conjunction with Respect, we will participate in Start With Hello Week from September 23 - 27. We will learn how to include those who are feeling left out or isolated by “Starting with Hello”.

Notes from the Stage
Kindergarten students will be learning about the difference between rhythm and steady beat. Students will demonstrate each one. We will be working on our singing voice, matching pitch, and learn some very simple songs. Students will also learn how to walk in place to a steady beat as well. All of what we work on will be through active participation.
First grade will learn what a steady beat is and we are applying this to barred instruments. They are learning the differences between high notes and low notes through the use of barred instruments as well. In a few weeks, we will begin "Christmas in September." We will begin to work on Christmas songs for our PTO performance in December. To that end, students will learn how to match pitch, sing with good, age-appropriate diction, and projection. In short, what is the difference between singing and mumbling.

From the Gym
Physical Education is focused on keeping students active so that they develop healthy living skills. This month, students will be working on the following:
Spatial awareness
Proper and smooth kinesthetic movements
Teamwork
Gross and fine motor skills
Sportsmanship
Just as a reminder, your student must wear tennis/athletic shoes on days he or she has PE. This is a safety practice to help ensure your child's safety while participating physical activities in the gym.
