Professional Development and Forever Learning
This fall, I stepped out a little and was accepted to present at a new conference called TCCA. I have attended this conference for many years, but had never presented there. Along with our campus DLS, Stacy Alexander, we were able to share our innovative way of doing our morning announcements. We presented two sessions on our Krimmel Knights Live News Team. It was rewarding and exciting to see people from outside of our own campus that were excited to see what we were doing. Presenting and sharing at conferences keeps the light burning for me and it was fun to see that our news team was "turnt up" as the kids say!
The best part of the TCCA Conference was convincing some of our teachers to go with me! It was a day of learning, fellowship, a whole bunch of laughter, but more importantly engaging conversations with like-minded people that want to do the best they can for students.
Relationship Driven
Building Community during Hurricane Harvey Relief
After the roads cleared and staff could make it to Krimmel, I instituted a donation site to also help with the overflow of donations being received at the KMPC. The first day, we began collecting donations and organizing them in the library and cafeteria. We were able to section off the library and set up a store type format with canned goods, bottled water, diapers, formula, and any other non-perishable items that the community donated. All of the clothing, bedding, and shoe donations were organized by size in the cafeteria. The second day we create a phone hotline by alphabet for our families to call and request assistance. We had staff volunteer to answer phones and take down the needs of our families. We were able to share these phone numbers with other intermediate campuses and help their families as well. Once we received the list of needs, we had community volunteers go and "shop" for the family to fill their orders. The volunteers then called the family to arrange a pick-up time, and it ran really smoothly. From there the same day, we also welcomed walk-in families that needed help as well. Over 3 days, we were able to help clothe and feed 225 families that came to Krimmel for assistance, as well as two nursing homes, and a hotel of stranded guests. We had volunteers from our Krimmel community, as well as surrounding middle school and high school students that wanted to volunteer their time. On the fouth final day when we boxed up any remaining donations, our hearts were full from the compassion that was displayed within the walls of Krimmel Intermediate. We weren't just a school, we were a family taking care of each other. After school had returned to session, I and student volunteers were asked to be part of a "thank you" video that the district was making, it was an honor.
Morale Building and Staff Relationships
This year before students came back, I organized a "Pre-Game Staff Social" before we went to the district Kick-Off Celebration. We had grilled hot dogs, beverages, door prizes, and different activities for teachers to do together like games, corn-hole, photo booths, etc. The staff was in a great mood and felt like a cohesive group before we went to kick off the start of another school year with Dr. Champion.
Throughout the year, I also organize fun activities like bringing in different vendors for teachers to check out during lunches or conference periods, a Halloween type Secret Santa game called "Boo Buddies," as well as events after-school where teachers can participate in different arts/crafts activities if they're interested.
