Message from Dr. Burns!
Dear Families and Students,
This week, our last week in April that includes the first day in May, will be our usual 5 day schedule. See above.
Last week, the Governor announced that we will finish the school year with Distance Learning, which will conclude on June 18. She has indicated that will be a couple of Pause Days and a vacation day - that we should be able to announce soon.
Our blue moods from cabin fever are still with us, especially as we slog through these gray rainy April days. But with obvious brightening colors of goldfinches, the budding of lime green leaves, and the teasing warm days that draw us outdoors to feel the warm yellow sunshine on our faces, our Rhode Island “hope” can’t help but emerge. There are so many unknowns about this virus, but your love, courage and reassuring presence for your children is the greatest tonic they have. Families, please take good care of yourselves! You help improve their learning when you ask your children what they are learning, by looking at their work, checking in on Aspen and in their Google Classrooms. This truly shows that you value their education while at the same time nurtures their ability to problem solve, better understand what they know and what they don’t quite know yet, and provides them a life-long lesson about how to cope at times such as this.
KMS is working hard to provide your children a sense of community, a place of care and a learning environment that is both routine and engaging in real-world activities. Did you know that KMS teachers are meeting everyday to analyze their instruction, review student levels of engagement and planning revised lessons? Everyday our student support professionals - school counselors, school psychologist and school social worker, are working directly with students, families, teachers and administrators to advise, advocate and remind us to celebrate. Administrators are checking into “classrooms”, reviewing lesson plans, and meeting families and school personnel - including daily meetings with district and other school administrators every single day. There are many things that are telling us that our efforts are working, and working very well. There are also areas where we need to improve. Together, we will get better and better. Please reach out to your teachers and/or administrators with your ideas and questions.
One last thing I need to share. A group of our specialist teachers - Art, Wellness, STEM, Inquiring Minds, Librarian came together to problem solve around student engagement and support students to coordinate their learning among multiple courses and disciplines. We are #KMSteams & #KMSproud of them and so excited about how students will participate in an important project that will make a difference. Stay tuned!
Be safe, be well,
Love,
Dr. Burns

BWRSD Online Tech Support for Families
Please continue to email BWRSDTech@BWRSD.org for support during this time of Distance Learning. The email account is accessible 24 hours per day, and you can expect a response within 1 school day. The most common issue for not being able to access apps such as STEMscopes is that they may not be going in through CLEVER or that families need to have students login to the Chrome browser with their BWRSD credentials. Here are directions.
If you have a broken device please email BWRSDTech@bwrsd.org.
Important Info from Nurse Welchman
April 2020
From The KMS Nurse
Dear KMS Students, Parents, Guardians,
I want to check in and let our KMS family know that I am thinking of you everyday during this challenging time.
If you need anything, have any questions or concerns please reach out to me. (CONTACT INFO BELOW)
Although we may feel stressed or anxious at times, there are some things we can do to help ourselves deal with this.
Try and maintain a routine and create a schedule for yourself.
Schedule at the same time daily the time you: wake, eat, learn/study, exercise, spend time with family, watch TV, go outdoors, and bedtime. This actually helps us stay focused, feel better and decrease anxiety.
Limit TV time and online/social media time and know that some information online and on social media may be inaccurate and cause anxiety
Talk about your feelings with your family at home and share any thoughts you have.
Know that our state and health officials are encouraging us to practice social distancing and stay home to keep us safe and well.
Share any new information with me, your Team, teacher, guidance counselor, administrator anytime.
I hope you are all enjoying remote learning and finding the positives.
Although this new way of learning remotely has its challenges, it also has its benefits.
Not having to wake up so early
Eating meals on your own schedule.
Not having to worry about what you are wearing, how your hair looks and about that new pimple that just appeared on your face this morning.
Shorter school day
Going outside whenever you want….when it’s not raining. Seems like we have had more rain lately.
Studying from the comforts of your own bed, couch etc
Freedom to use the bathroom without a PASS
Freedom to walk around without a PASS
Not having to rush through the halls and worry if you will be late to class.
Still being able to stay connected and in touch with friends and KMS staff online
