2017 MRHS Convocation Ceremony - Much to be thankful for!
Our Convocation tradition is a very special occasion, a celebration of our bright, articulate, caring and extremely hard working students in recognition of their efforts. It is also a celebration of good will, community support of school, and a show of extreme generosity by our gracious donors as exemplified by the over $262,000+ that was awarded our students through scholarships. Thank you very much donors! We also celebrate special awards granted members of our senior class.
We felt strongly that we had so much to be thankful for and so much to celebrate at our school, and in our community, we needed a special night to do it = Convocation tradition. It was important to us, also, that our donors have an opportunity to actually meet the students and for our students to have the opportunity to say thank you in person to our donors. We look forward to this ceremony growing more successful by the year, and thank you all again for making Monomoy Great!
National Letters about Literature with Ms. Kelly
Once again, students from Monomoy Regional High School participated in the national Letters about Literature contest as part of the ELA curriculum. Sponsored locally by the Massachusetts Center for the Book and affiliated nationally with the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, students wrote a letter to the author of a book that had a profound impact on his or her life, changing their view of the world or themselves.
This year, the Massachusetts program read nearly 3,000 letters on three levels in grades four through twelve. Students write letters to authors whose works personally resonate with them, changing their outlooks of the world or themselves. Commonwealth judges select one top winner from each level and also recognize students in honors, honorable mention and semi-finalist categories. Monomoy is proud to celebrate the work of our four students whose writing stood out among the thousands of letters submitted in Massachusetts.
Sophomore Sean Stone advanced to the final round where his letter to Arthur Conan Doyle, author of the Sherlock Holmes’ stories, earned an Honor’s award, representing the top one per cent of participants statewide. Sean was recognized in an awards ceremony at the State house in Boston on May 16. Shout Out to Ms. Kelly, who accompanied Sean, and to Ms. Dooley (retired MRHS teacher), who also attended the ceremony.
Additionally, three other sophomores advanced to the second round of judging and were selected as semi-finalists, the top 10% of letter writers in the state. Those certificates of achievement are extended to Veronica Simundson, Ryan Neiser, and Ted Clifford, for their respective letters to J.K Rowling, William Golding and Beatrix Potter.
The recipients are students of ELA teacher Karen Kelly.Democracy Alive & Well at MRHS - Monomoy Grade 8 sweeps Project Citizen!

Please note that the Health Office is open daily from 7:45am - 2:45pm. The Health Office closes for lunch daily from 12:18pm - 12:43pm. If the nurse is out of the office for any reason, the door is locked for safety. Students are asked to return to class if the reason for the visit is not of an urgent nature. If the visit is of an urgent nature or medication is required, the students are instructed to report to the Main Office where the Nurse can be contacted by radio. There is a notice posted on the door detailing the procedure. The Health Office is open during Jawsome hour. Students are encouraged to visit during that hour to avoid missing instruction in the classroom.
Parents/guardians, please pick up any unused medication(s) that your child has in the school Health Office by the last day of school (June 21st). The school cannot store medication in the office over the summer and any unclaimed medication will be destroyed. Orders for prescription medication are required to be renewed annually. Please contact the Health Office to make arrangements or if you have questions or concerns.
Graduating seniors - Your medical and immunization records are in the white folders that will be distributed by the Guidance Office. Wishing you excellent health and congratulations to the Class of 2017!

Shark "Shout Outs" MRHS's way of Appreciating the Great People That Make Our School "A Home Away From Home"
The Student Council would like to send a "Shark Shout Out" to Hayden Bowman! StuCo members collected donations this morning to support Ms. Waystack's Housing with Love Walk. Hayden generously donated $20.00 toward this cause, probably the largest single contribution we have received from all of our "Caps and Cups for a Cause" collections throughout this year. We truly appreciate and commend Hayden's generosity!

Summer Reading - MRHS Style
The sun has come out, and the summer reading books are almost ready to sail away for the summer. Our students may check to see which book they will be reading at the following link:
If your child happens to select a book that is not working out, we ask that you email Sarah Wheaton (swheaton@monomoy.edu) over the summer so we may plan for the groups. Students will not be able to switch books without us hearing from you.
Here is the updated timeline of events:
Wednesday, June 7th: Step Up Day
Our incoming Sharks will be taking their books home for the summer. We have included the required notes sheet inside their book. If the sheet gets lost over the summer, we will have a link to the document on our school website.
June 12-15th:
We will be distributing books by title during Jawsome Hour. This schedule will be posted next week. If your child has not returned his/her summer reading book from last year, we need it returned! We will be revealing discussion leaders before they leave for the summer.
