Cyber Safety
In recent weeks, we have had numerous questions involving the inappropriate use of technology among our students. We have been told that children are sharing pictures of things they see on their devices, such as Momo. We are asking for your help by offering the following guidelines:
· Watch videos and games with your child. Children can accidentally be exposed to harmful content on-line. If inappropriate content is introduced to your child, you will be able to offer an explanation or turn it off before anxiety begins.
· Protect your children by setting up the parental controls that YouTube and iTunes offer for parents. This will allow you to control what type of videos your children can access.
· Set up Family Link, which is Google’s parental control app. It lets parents set screen time limits and device locks.
· Research other parental controls. There are a number of tools available to parents to monitor and control internet usage.
· Have on going conversations with your children about what they are watching. Remind them that what they see shouldn’t be scary. If they see anything on-line that is disturbing, tell them to tell an adult right away.
· Teach your children to evaluate what they see on the internet. It’s important to teach children that just because something is on-line doesn’t mean that it is true.
· Make sure your children are only using their game system or mobile device in common areas of your home. This will make them less likely to attempt to go to inappropriate sites.
· If you allow your child to bring an electronic device to school, make sure they understand that they CANNOT look or show others inappropriate or scary content at school or on the bus.

Parents of Incoming Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten Students:
If you have an incoming PreK or Kindergartener for the 2019-2020 school year, online enrollment will begin on Monday, April 15th. You may apply online at the Powell homepage (Powell.ConroeISD.net) under “19-20 New Student Registration.” This link will give more details and list all documents necessary to complete enrollment in person. Children must be 4 years of age by September 1, 2019, and meet eligibility requirements to apply for PreK. Children must be 5 years of age by September 1, 2019, to apply for Kindergarten.
On Thursday, April 25th, from 4:30-6:00pm, we will have our “PreK and Kindergarten Early Registration Night” where you can finish your enrollment by bringing all necessary documents, meet the administrators, counselor, and Kindergarten teachers, tour the school, and get information from the PTO including school supply packs and spirit wear.
If you are unable to make the April 25th event, you can still complete registration during regular school hours after April 25th, until the last day of school, May 31st. Registration will then close for the summer break and re-open the last week of July. If you choose to wait until July or August to register, you will need to have an appointment to do so (signup will be on website in July).
Please contact Michelle Lutes, Registrar (mlutes@conroeisd.net) if you have any questions.

Congratulations, your child is the proud owner of a new recorder courtesy of our wonderful Powell PTO.
The children have brought their recorder home this week. I have a few suggestions for a peaceful Spring Break.
1. The recorder is a “real” instrument and should be treated as such.
2. It should make a nice, pleasant sound – if it is not, a friendly reminder is “no overblowing”
3. If you happen to see your child playing (and not just hear them) please check that their left hand is on top – all woodwind instruments are played this way.
4. The children should be able to play songs with three notes. A packet was sent home with the recorder that the child should use to practice.
5. The children need to bring their recorder to class when we come back from Spring Break.

Clinic News
It's flu season! According to the Department of State Health Services, the percentage of people testing positive for influenza has risen sharply over the last few weeks. To prevent the spread of the flu, use these tips:
- Sudden onset of fever, cough, and headache are signs of the flu. Body aches and fatigue may be present as well.
- Your child should STAY HOME if ill. The flu virus is easily transmitted to others about one day before symptoms begin, and for up to a week, even if antiviral medication is being taken.
- Contact your health care provider ASAP if you become ill. Medications are available to reduce the severity and duration of flu symptoms, but are most effective if started early.
- Practice washing hands and covering coughs with your child so they can protect themselves, and their friends.
- If you haven't already received a flu shot, it's not too late. Flu shots are recommended for most individuals 6 months of age and older.
If your child does become ill, allow them to rest at home. These guidelines have been provided by CISD to help you determine whether or not your child should come to school:
- Students must not come to school if temperature is greater than 100.0 F
- If medications like Tylenol, Advil or Motrin are being used to control or prevent fever, your student should stay at home. Students must be fever-free (below 100.0 F) for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medication before returning to school.
- Please contact us if your child tests positive for the flu.
Thank you for helping to keep our Powell Family healthy and happy by observing these guidelines!
