A Note from the Teacher
Hopefully, your child has been coming home and telling you about the fun activities we have been doing each week. This week was the editable snowmen. Next week, we will be making edible penguins and making the polar habitats. These activities are made possible because of all of your generosity. I am always amazed when I put a request out for supplies how quickly those requests are fulfilled. It is so awesome and I am truly grateful.
- There is no story this week, no weekly spelling list and no focus wall.
- There will be a unit review spelling test over unit 3 words. You can find these words on the previous focus walls, on Canvas under Spelling City. The Spelling City "module" in Canvas is great and your child can do it on his/her own! In fact, this is a great way to practice spelling each week.
- I have added the 2nd hundred-word list under a Canvas "module". If your child still needs to master this list you can check this out. Your child can listen to the word, have it read in a sentence, and listen to it again. This is great practice and your child can do it on his/her own!
- In case you are wondering what a Canvas "module" is...When your child logs in to Canvas on the left-hand side there are some options. 1. Module - this is where your child will find any lesson I have created for them. There is so much extra practice that your child can complete on his/her own. 2. ConnectEd - This is where you will find all the resources for the Wonders reading series. There are games for the skill that week, decodable readers, leveled readers, the Reading and Writing companion book, and the reader. 3. Clever - This is where your child can find Raz Kids ( a great source for books at his/her level), Xtra math (your child can do this one time a day and is AWSOME math fact practice), IReady (math practice) Freckle and ABCYA (educational games)
- Please remember to go over test packets with your child each week. Go over anything he/she missed. If I see a skill needs review your child will be put in a small group to work on that skill. It might help to do some review at home too.
We will be doing a polar animal unit next week. We have gathered some supplies including white tissue paper, cotton balls, Q-tips, packing peanuts, and marshmallows. We are asking if possible for each child to bring in a small shoebox-sized box to make a polar habitat. We will be researching polar habitats and animals. The children will be making their own polar habitat at school. If your child has other supplies he/she wants to bring in he/she is more than welcome to bring in his/her own supplies. These may include actual polar animals or any other appropriate "props."
If you have supplies that you are willing to share with the class please send those in too.
This is a school project that will be completed at school. Please do not build the habitat at home.
Please send all the supplies in on Monday or Tuesday. Please do not feel like you have to go out and buy supplies for this project. Our hope is that you can gather things you already have at home.
Thanks for your help.

Math Fact Practice Tips:
- Practice nightly with your child. Right now we use the counting up or counting down strategy. I will be introducing touch math this week. This was included in your orientation material. As the facts get higher we will be using doubles to help figure out tougher problems. EX. If you know 7 + 7 = 14 then you also know what 7 + 8 would be 1 more (15). I will also be teaching the 9's by making a 10 by taking one from the lower number. Ex. 9 + 7 becomes easier when you think of 10 + 6.
- Please do not encourage the use of fingers.
- Please have your child practice one time over the weekend.
- There is a great app. called Math Drills you could try with your child.
- I included the link to math-drills below to print off practice sheets. We allow 5 seconds for each problem.
