Parent Involvement Opportunities

We will be hosting Goal Setting Conferences will all students and their parents/guardians during the week of September 23-27. We will have a late night on Tuesday, September 24 until 7:30 pm. Contact your student's teacher NOW to sign up for a conference time to discuss your student's academic progress and set goals for the year.

Alta Vista Homework Policy

Alta Vista Elementary is a "limited" homework campus. This means that teachers will not be sending homework for students to be completed and returned for a grade. We want families to focus on READING EVERY NIGHT. This practice is more effective and builds stronger foundations than any homework that might be sent home. In addition, we want students to have time after school to pursue extracurricular activities, and want families to have time to eat dinner together!

If you would like additional practice to do with your student, feel free to contact your student's teachers. We do recommend sight word practice and math fact practice when you have time.

Math Fact Fluency

Fact fluency is an important skill in developing student's ability to solve more challenging math problems. Each month, we will be sending home a letter explaining what facts students will be learning. We will also include some ideas for different ways for your student to practice math facts at home.

September focus:

Kindergarten: Numbers 0-5

1st Grade and 2nd Grade: +1 Facts

3rd, 4th, 5th Grade: Review all addition facts up to 10+10

Please spend a few minutes each evening helping your student review the assigned math facts.

Monthly Reading Challenge

Look out for monthly reading challenge every month. Students can complete the monthly challenge to earn a FREE BOOK!

Math Chat

We are excited to share with you an awesome series of math music videos from NUMBEROCK on YouTube. They have songs to help your students learn just about any math concept in elementary song. We highly recommend you subscribe to their channel on YouTube and encourage your students to watch! Here are some videos about math topics students are studying this month.

BEAR Project

Alta Vista Elementary is excited to partner with Baylor University's BEAR Project. Our staff member will be supporting the social-emotional well being of students through small group and one on one social skills lessons, building partnerships between the community, families, and school, and supporting teachers with positive behavior strategies. If you have a student who could benefit from small group or one-on-one counseling, please reach out to Ms. Allison Rigg by calling 662-3050.

Donations Needed

Do you have any school uniforms that your students don't wear? We will take them! Ms. Baker, our Community In Schools liaison, is looking for school uniform donations to help out students in need. You can drop them off at Alta Vista Elementary in the main office.

YMCA After-School Childcare

The YMCA offers childcare at Alta Vista Monday through Friday until 6:00 pm. You can contact the YMCA (Harvey Location) at 753-KIDS (Extension 403) for more information.
