Online Update

August 12, 2020

Who are we?

The WLWV K12 Online Program is a full-year, full-time, fully virtually learning option for families this year that allows students to learn at home while maintaining a connection with their home school community. The Online Program sits beside our school-based model, where students will begin the year in Comprehensive Distance Learning at home, then return to school in a Hybrid model when it is safe to do so. Students in this model will also be able to learn from home for the full year if they choose.

The Online Program will serve more than 1,650 students from across the district, with a staff of 72 WLWV teachers ensuring high levels of learning in what is clearly going to be a unique year.

Be sure to sign up for our listserv so you can continue to receive the Online Update each week!

Questions About Your Student's Course Selection

We've had lots of questions about course selection for students. First thing to do: don't panic! The surveys are not going to close; we just need families to complete them as soon as possible so we can begin the process of creating student schedules. See the information below to guide you in this process.

Yes, elective courses are optional this year in the primary and middle school programs. We know that many families are choosing to engage in other learning experiences to meet this need, and want to allow the flexibility to do so. Students may sign up for more than one elective if they choose, or add electives later in the year.

High school students will note that there are some new courses offered this year, and some not available. List the courses or course clusters in your survey that you are most interested in taking, or list the course you had planned to take and we will find the best match of the courses available.

Because the Online Program is offering such a broad array of elective and career courses, there will be some courses that students will complete fairly independently, without live lessons or small groups. Courses such as digital arts, art and photography, however, will have art teachers available to support their learning.

While we are not able to offer performance courses in the Online Program, like band and choir, we will be finding ways for students to stay connected with these programs. More information about these options will be available at the beginning of the school year.
