HIs father was a member of the United States Marine Band. At the age of twenty-six, Sousa was named conductor of the United States Marine Band. Before he was a conductor, he was an apprentice musician and studied theory harmony, and composition. Also, he took violin lessons, his primary instrument. He formed a 300 member band of sailors. Sousa was best known for the 136 marches he wrote for his band.
