HOLA Families Newsletter Nov 30th
Holbrook Language Academy
Message from Principal Orellana
Welcome back! I hope you all had a nice and relaxed break. We are happy to have our Jets back at school!
The FIFA World Cup 2022 has started over the break and there is a lot of excitement around this amazing event. This week there has been a lot of happy buzzing and cheering for the many national teams!
Which one is your favorite soccer team?
I invite all students (and families) to bring in their favorite soccer team jersey (local, or national teams are welcome) on Fridays or when your favorite team is playing!
AMAZING News!!!
Our beloved school has been the Number One school in our school district on number of points improved from the CAASPP test in 2019 compared to 2022 in both Language Arts and Mathematics.
I am very proud of our teachers and students for this great growth in student achievement.
As a team we are committed to fostering dual language education so that students are bilingual, biliterate , with high academic achievement and global citizenship. This growth is just one testament of who we are at Holbrook. We want to continue in this trajectory and we thank your partnership with the school to make this possible for all of our Jets!

You may donate to one or as many as you want to support our school. All contributions are welcome!
Teachers will hand out the calendars shortly and you can send any donations in an envelope that will be placed in the Donations Box in the office.

School Updates
School Maintenance
The students' comfort level is our highest priority. Since the PG&E incident on September 6th, the Mt. Diablo Unified School District has been working to restore HVAC in all classrooms at the Holbrook Language Academy. Currently, five classrooms on the campus are still affected. Each of these has been provided with two portable heating units.
Due to manufacturing shortages that continue because of Covid, it has taken longer than anticipated to receive the parts necessary to make the repairs. After installing the newly received replacement motors, it was identified that a panel board replacement was also necessary. Those panels have been ordered and we anticipate that installation will be completed next week.
A maintenance crew inspected all classrooms on November 30th and they will bring an additional heater so all classrooms affected have three heaters in the classrooms.
Bronze/ Silver Award Ceremony: It will be held on December 3. The Silver and Bronze Awards are the highest honors a Girl Scout can earn in each age group over Girl Scouts at Holbrook and are awarded to girls who display leadership while engaging in projects that benefit their communities. Earning one of these Highest Awards requires badge earning and project planning and many hours of work on their Take Action Project. Take Action Projects go above and beyond basic community service to work with a community to create a long-term project that is sustainable, makes a lasting impact, and addresses the root cause of an issue in the community.
Tobacco Use Prevention Education (TUPE) programs include multiple student services,
including classroom-based substance abuse prevention programs, intervention and
cessation services, and youth development activities, such as peer education, as well
as family and community engagement, and staff professional development.
While the primary focus of the program is tobacco prevention, our strategies are
comprehensive and include information on alcohol, marijuana, and other drugs.
Students are also building a wide variety of important and relevant skills including
communication, planning, public speaking, and decision making.
At Holbrook, we have our School Counselor who is our TUPE coordinator and she is bringing a group of Middle School Students together to get training on strategies and tools to support this prevention program. This program offers an incredible opportunity to become school leaders!
Our trained peer educator students received their full day orientation on 10/20/2022 and had their first peer educator meeting on 11/4/2022. They will be training 4th-8th grade students throughout the school year.

HOLA Jet Families!
It officially feels like WINTER - so lets celebrate with WINTERFEST next week - on December 6th from 6pm - 8pm at our school
This is our Winter event where we can learn about all the cultures in our Holbrook Family and have some fun together.
We are looking for some help in creating this event - so if you would like to host a culture table, please let us know. All you need to do is come and bring some things that represent your culture. You can keep it as simple or as extravagant as you would like. The kids will come around and learn from you and get a stamp on their Passport until its full. It is really fun and a great way to meet the other JETS at our school!
If you are able to do that, please reach out to Jen @ Holapfcspirit@gmail.com
And if you are not able to do a table, please just come and have some fun! Bring your friends and family and enjoy an evening at HOLA and a cup of hot cocoa and a cookie!
We look forward to seeing you there!
Any questions, please reach out to Holapfcspirit@gmail.com
