Henking Family Newsletter

January 7, 2022

Welcome Back!

We hope you have all had the opportunity for some quality family time over winter break. I am sure that you are aware of the increase in COVID cases caused by the new variant Omicron.

The District continues to focus on our goal to keep students in school, in person, for as much as possible in the safest environment possible. In-person learning is best for children, academically and for their social and emotional well-being.

Though COVID case counts now are high, we continue to see evidence that schools are the safest place for children. While the positivity rate in our township is 11%, the positivity rate from SHIELD testing in our schools is around 6%. We will continue to follow the health and safety protocols that we know work to mitigate the spread.

Important Dates

Monday, January 17th - No School District Closed (Martin Luther King)

Monday, January 24th - Board Meeting at 7:30p.m. @ Westbrook School

Big picture

Reminder - Proof of Vaccination Process

The District asks parents of students who are vaccinated to complete the form in PowerSchool to provide proof of vaccination.

In order to facilitate contact tracing and reduce any unnecessary long-term absences, District 34 requests that families of students who have been vaccinated against COVID-19 provide proof of vaccination. There is no need to submit paperwork; simply log into PowerSchool and enter the dates your child received both doses of the Pfizer vaccine, and upload an image of your child's vaccine card. The District will verify this information through the state's I-CARE system.

Here's how it works:

After you log into the Parent Portal, click on COVID19 (21-22) on the left.

Winter Weather

Dear Henking families,

Now that we are entering the cold winter months we want to remind you to please send your child to school with winter gear. Due to the importance of providing students with mask breaks and the benefits of fresh air, we will continue to follow the district guidelines when deciding to hold recess outdoors. For recess, if the “feels like/wind chill” temperature is below 10° (at 9° or lower) children will remain indoors. We follow weather.com for our forecast each day.

Please remember children must have snow pants, boots, and gloves to play in the snow.

At 3:40pm, if the temperature is below 20° (at 19° or lower) we will dismiss walkers and car pick ups from the West Gym. We do this because on inclement weather days the car line increases and we want to minimize the amount of time students stand stationary outside. Thank you for your patience these days.

As always, contact our school office if you have any questions or concerns.

2022-2023 Kindergarten Registration is Open

Online kindergarten registration for the 2022-2023 school year is open! District 34 will launch full-day kindergarten (FDK) at all of our primary schools. A half-day option remains available.

Thanks to the successful referendum, there is space for all families who wish to select FDK! To learn more about kindergarten in District 34, visit glenview34.org/fdk and watch this video at tinyurl.com/FDKinD34.

If you have all your questions answered, and know that you’re ready to register, click here for the online application.

At the November 15 meeting, the D34 Board of Education approved the FDK fee for the 2022-2023 school year. If you register before March 31, 2022, the fee is $3,300; it will automatically be set in 10 equal installments. When you register, you will be asked to make an initial payment of $330; then, nine monthly payments will be set in e~Funds for Schools, the District’s payment processor. The first monthly payment after the deposit will be due by September 1, 2022. You will have the option of making those monthly payments, or you can pay multiple installments at any time. For registrations after March 31, 2022, the FDK fee is $3,600. The early registration rate for half-day kindergarten is $127.

Fee Waivers & Reduced Fees
Families who need financial assistance can apply for an income-based fee waiver. Those who apply must provide proof of income to be considered for free or reduced FDK fees. The reduced fee is $580. The criteria for receiving a fee waiver are the same as the National School Lunch Program.

You can find the waiver application online here.

Full Day or Half Day?
We know that you have questions about what FDK and the half-day experience will look like for your children. The website shares information about FDK, and highlights that FDK includes more time for:

  • Learning through play
  • Relationships and community building
  • Standards-based curriculum
  • Family partnerships

The structure of half-day kindergarten will depend on the number of students enrolled. (That is a big reason that we are opening up registration for kindergarten earlier than in previous years.) If enough families wish to enroll their child in half-day kindergarten, the District will offer a dedicated half-day program (either at each school or at one location, depending on the numbers of students enrolled). If there are very few students whose families choose the half-day option, students will attend at their home school, but attend for a half day in the same classroom with full-day classmates.

We encourage families to enroll as soon as possible, so we can begin planning for both full- and half-day kindergarten.

Registration Assistance
Online registration is quick and easy. In-person help will be available at the D34 Admin Building (1401 Greenwood Rd., next to Westbrook) on January 26, February 24 and March 29 from 4:30pm-7:00pm. You also can call 847-998-5063 or email residency@glenview34.org with questions.
