By Jacqueline Parks, WCS Principal
There are lots of fun and special projects going on at WCS over the course of the next four weeks, along with many annual assessments. Please mark your calendars with special events that relate to your child and spend some extra time talking with your child about these unique learning opportunities and assessments. In most cases, additional, more detailed information will be sent out to families.
January 28-February 1st: All students in grades 3 and 4 will work with Artist In Residence, Jon Gailmor. He will be working with each class to write and sing a song related to their Vermont Studies curriculum unit. Parents are invited to join us on Friday, Feb. 1st at 1:15 pm for the concert.
January 28th: Young Playwrights Session #2 for designated middle level students. An experience in learning how to write a successful play. Plays are submitted to the Flynn Theater and some are chosen to be performed by actors.
February 1st: Sterling House is hosting a dance for students in grades 5-8 from 6:30-8:30 pm. This is the first dance of the year that our 5th graders can attend. Admission cost is $8.00 and snacks are sold separately.

Big Basket Raffle seeks committee members
Have you heard of FAP’s Big Basket Raffle and Silent Auction School Fundraiser? It’s attended by 300+ community members and last year it raised over $9,500 for educational programs that complement classroom learning. Over 55 themed baskets are raffled off and 25 other items are bid on through a Silent Auction. The Basket Raffle will be held in the evening on Saturday, April 13, 2019.
This fundraiser is the result of the efforts of many volunteers and planning efforts begin next month. AND WE NEED YOU!! Are you good at marketing/advertising? Are you good with computers and formatting documents? Are you creative? How do you feel about approaching businesses you frequent and asking for a donation for your children’s school? These are just some of the tasks that go into planning this significant school fundraiser.
Please contact Emily Downing Ponce at emilydowningponce@gmail.com for further information!

Eighth Grade Challenge
Health Office
We are staring to see Flu activity in our schools. We check temperatures of all students who come to the health office and this time of year, we are a bit stricter on our return-to-school recommendations.
In an effort to reduce the spread of illness, we ask that you keep your sick child home until they are healthy (fever-free x 24 hours without medicine), reinforce the importance of covering coughs and sneezes with an elbow or tissue, and encourage your child to wash hands often and well. At school, we are reinforcing good hand and cough hygiene and cleaning in work spaces.
Please, let the Health Office know if your child is sick with flu-like illness or if he or she has been diagnosed with influenza. If you have any questions, we encourage you to call your child's pediatrician or refer to the resources we've shared below.
Be well, Maria, Carol and Sylvia
