Friedell Middle School

September 7 - 11

The Week Ahead!

Thank you all for your patience as we worked through item pick-up, as well as with technology in getting started with school! Please know that we are here to support you and your student in any way. If you are still struggling to get iPads setup, or into Google Meet events, please reach out to us at the Friedell Office: 507-328-5650. We are able to set up appointments for people to come to school to help, and we can even do house visits if that is more convenient. Our goal is to connect you and your student to their teachers and supports!

Please know we offer far more than tech help in getting to class! We have additional school supplies and an amazing support network of School Counseling and Social Workers to support with any other needs that may arise for you and your student!

We hope the second week of school goes well for all. If you have any questions about the information here in the newsletter, please let us know!

Virtual Open House

Thursday, Sep. 10th, 6-8pm

This is an online event.

Plan on joining us on Thursday, September 10th for the Friedell 2020-2021 school year Open House and Meet the Teacher! We will send out a page the morning of this event that has links for each teacher! We will be available through Google Meet, and be presenting some information about ourselves every 15 minutes so that families can gather some information from multiple teachers.

If you have questions about the event, please contact the Friedell office! 507-328-5650

Big picture

What if my student does not have all their classes yet?

Please remember that students can join all of their classes, and should do so to access the information about that class. Here is a link to a repository of all our class codes for students to access. When in the Google Classroom App on your iPad, simply click the 'plus' button in the lower right of the screen and enter the code from the repository for your classes! That should help you join your class.

Teachers will be working this week to confirm all students are in their classes. If they notice a student is not in their class, they will also 'invite' those students to the Google Classroom. In those cases, students will need to click "join" on the class banner to accept that invitation!

Please remember, that for all Google related things on the iPads, students need to use their account. The account is their student ID number, so an example would be If your student reset their Google Password, it may not sync correctly with the system, so please call the Friedell office so we can help them as well!

Distance Learning Student Standards

We know that Distance Learning (DL) is different for us all. Part of what is different is that the interaction protocols vary greatly from being in person. Recently Mr. Munoz shared some information on the standards of distance learning that we think are important for all to have again. We will be speaking about these in class, as well as posting in the grade level Google Classrooms. Please let us know if you, or your student, has any questions!

Apps for iPads

Our students are becoming more efficient at downloading apps to their iPads. We use the "Self Service" portal on the district iPads. For parents, we have included a couple of documents so you know which apps your student should have on their iPad!

Here is the list for the 6th grade students!

Here is the list for 7th and 8th grade students!

If you have any questions, please let us know!

We want to give your 6th grader a gift!

We are still working on getting each 6th grader a T-Shirt. We are close to having all of the responses from our incoming group of students. Once we have them all, or might call some that did not complete the form, we will start making deliveries of the T-shirts! We may leave them by a door, or in a mailbox, so be on the lookout for a Friedell shirt later next week! If you would still like to complete the form (for any 6th grader or a student new to Friedell in grades 7 or 8) please complete this 6th grade information!

Weekly School Information

Each week we will send out information that directly applies to the following week of school! Since the first week is so short, you are getting the first 2 weeks today! Generally, we will also try to include any building updates and reminders that staff will be posting work on Friday or Monday for the week ahead. Right now our goal is to get to know students, so there should not be posts about upcoming work or projects that are due the first week!

The letter and number days for next week are below! If you would like to see a more comprehensive school calendar, you may do so on the district website or with this link! There are a few calendars, but you most likely want to look at the Middle School Block Schedule Calendar.

Absences during Distance Learning (DL)

Friedell parents,

We will be following the absence process this Fall that we have typically used to excuse students form school. If you need to excuse your student from school for appointments or illness, you may submit that online or call the main office at 328-5660, and Mrs. Schnell will enter your student's absence into Skyward. You will see these absences reflected in Skyward Family Access under Attendance.

Please know that if you report an absence for illness, we ask for specific details about the illness (nausea, vomiting, headache, COVID-like symptoms, etc.)

Parents may now submit their student Absence online as well! Please see the document below to see how you can submit an absence through Skyward!

Free Lunch Program!

Please know our district is offering free meals to any children 18 and younger! Please see information about sites and times below!

Help is on the Way!

We realize that there are some times later in the day when you wish you could 'phone a friend' to help with those pesky Math problems, or some solution in Science. Well, Help is on the way in the form of Extended Hour Homework Help through community education!

Please look for more information from Community Education on evening Homework Help google meets! We will start with a few nights a week, but staff will be present in a Google Meet to support the students in Math, English, or Science!
