"Myself" by Edgar Guest

I have to live with myself, and so,
I want to be fit for myself to know;
I want to be able as days go by,
Always to look myself straight in the eye;
I don't want to stand with the setting sun
And hate myself for the things I've done.
I don't want to keep on a closet shelf
A lot of secrets about myself,
And fool myself as I come and go
Into thinking that nobody else will know
The kind of woman I really am;
I don't want to dress myself up in sham.
I want to deserve all men's respect;
But here in this struggle for fame and wealth,
I want to be able to like myself.
I don't want to think as I come and go
That I'm bluster (talking loud and saying nothing) and bluff (deceiving) and an empty show.
I never can hide myself from me,
I see what others may never see,
I know what others may never know,
I never can fool myself -- and so,
Whatever happens, I want to be
Self-respecting and conscience free

What is self esteem?

It is your self image, or how you feel about yourself. Your self esteem is made up of thoughts and feelings you have about yourself. These may be positive. For example:

  • I'm pretty
  • I'mm smart
  • I learn from my mistakes
  • I'm fun
Or you could have negative. For example:

  • I'm ugly
  • I'm stupid
  • I'm afraid to fail
  • I'm boring
The more positive feelings you have about yourself, the higher the self esteem. The more negative feelings you have about yourself, the lower your self esteem.

Why should I think about my self esteem?

Self esteem affects the way you live, how you think, act, and feel about yourself and others, how successful you are in achieving your goals in life. High self esteem can make you feel effective, productive, capable, and lovable. Low self esteem can make you feel ineffective, worthless, incompetent, and unloved.
