A Note from the Principal
I am excited to be returning from my medical leave (due to back surgery) this Monday! I have missed the activities of the school, the daily interactions with our faculty and staff, but most importantly - THE STUDENTS!
I want to extend my sincere gratitude to Ms. Karen Thomsen, Ms. Candice Ray, and Ms. Teresa Shank for filling in for me while I was out, along with our faculty and staff who are always willing to jump in and do "whatever it takes" to make sure everything runs effectively. It only solidifies my belief that we have people in our building that care deeply about our students.
Finally, I would like to thank those students and families that reached out with well-wishes for me personally during my recovery. The WSPMS faculty and staff are fortunate to work with such a supportive community!
Sincerely-
John Childs
Fun in the Library!
Applications Available!
Curriculum Night in the TA Auditorium on Thursday, February 6th at 7:00
The Administration and Counseling Department at Turner Ashby High School would like to extend an invitation to all rising 9th graders and their parents to attend Curriculum Night in the TA Auditorium on Thursday, February 6th at 7:00. As students are engaged in the process of registering for classes for next year, families in attendance will have the opportunity to hear about the high school program of studies and better understand course options available to your student.
In addition to this evening program, all 8th graders will participate in an Elective Day at TAHS on Thursday, February 13th. Students will ride the bus to TA in the morning and will be able to observe a variety of courses within career and technical education, the fine arts, and photojournalism that are available to them. We hope this will aid them in making decisions about what electives they wish to select as their primary and alternate choices for the 2020-2021 school year. Students will also hear about graduation requirements as part of this event.
Students will complete the course registration with the counselors at WSPMS following their visit on the 13th. Please plan to join us on the 6th and engage your student in conversation regarding their class choices. If you have any questions, you are welcome to call the Counseling Department at 828-2008. We look forward to partnering with you in the success of the Class of 2024!

Expanding Your Horizons Conference
Dear Students, Parents, and Friends of EYH:
Thank you for your past involvement or interest in the Expanding Your Horizons Conference (EYH) at James Madison University. Please save the date for this year’s conference: Saturday, March 21, 2020
EYH is an annual STEM conference designed for girls in grades 6-8. Please note the change in grade levels for this year’s conference. The EYH conference includes hands-on workshops on a broad range of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics topics, keynote talks, a science demonstration, and a lunch with JMU students majoring in STEM. EYH also includes workshops for accompanying adults. The conference is free, but advance registration is required for all attendees.
Due to the high demand for the conference,, EYH will utilize an online lottery system for registration for individuals and small groups again this year. The lottery will open on the EYH conference website on Friday, February 14th. Students will be able to enter the lottery as individuals or as part of a group of 2 to 6 students. You will receive another email with full registration details in early February, or you can find that information now on the conference website http://www.jmu.edu/mathstat/eyh.
Virginia public schools and official, recognized community organizations in Virginia that want to bring an organized, large group of students to EYH are eligible to apply to bring a group of 10-20 students to the conference. An application form is required for large groups, and the deadline for these applications is Friday, February 7th. The application form and more information about the large group application process is posted on the EYH website http://www.jmu.edu/mathstat/eyh
We appreciate your help in spreading the word about EYH. Anyone who is interested in receiving email updates about the conference can join our email list using the link on the front page of the EYH website http://www.jmu.edu/mathstat/eyh.
