Sustainable Ecosytems

A "Green" Environment

This home is located in the Temperate Deciduous Forest biome. Around the home, there are many trees, including Oaks and Maples, and multiple shrubs and ferns. These are great decorations for the home, and also every eco-friendly. There is lots of natural plants and vegetation surrounding the home, as well.


I would farm many vegetables like tomatos, potatos, corn, etc. This is not only eco-friendly but would also double up as a second food source for the family. I would use natural fertilizers (some store bought, some made from compost) because they are better for the environment and less damaging. I would not use any pesticides. I would just let nature run its course since I would not be really depending on that food as a main food supply.


I would drive a Lexus CT 200h. This vehicle is very good for the environment and is very eco-friendly. It has one of the best fuel consumption ratings of any luxury vehicle in Canada, and it emits nearly 70% fewer smog-forming emissions than its competitors. This car creates less air pollution and uses less gasoline. This I helping us preserve earth's non-renewable resources and protect our oxygen supply.

Waste Management

I would have a compost and recycling system in my home. The compost system would help reduce waste in our landfills. Plus, I could also use it to make natural fertilizers for my own plants and lawn instead of wasting money and destroying our earth by buying and using artificial store bought fertilizers. A recycling system would be good for our environment. I could also reuse things like plastic water bottles instead of recycling them or throwing them out right away.

Endangered Species

My family would sponsor a red wolf at the local zoo. This is because they are very endangered in the Temperate Deciduous Forest Biome. Their main threats are humans and interbredding with coyotes. One of the main issues in this biome is the fact that many people and industries are cutting down multiple trees and destroying our forests. This is posing an even bigger threat toward red wolves. This endangered species is quite literally "right in our backyard", so I believe it is very important to take a stand and do what we can to protect them.

The Characteristics of Electricity

Electrical Energy Source

I will use solar energy (a renewable source) for my home. This energy source is very sustainable for future generations. Solar energy is powered by the sun. The sun will never go away (until 10000s of years). It is completely renewable. The sun will always be there and future generations can use it, and not worry about replacing it.

Physical Structures

Different structures like solar panels and wind turbines can make a house more energy efficient. To reduce wasted energy, you can use good insulators that will keep heat/cold in. You can also use eco-friendly air conditionings and heaters. There are many heat pumps that are efficiently cost and reduce the amount of wasted energy in homes.


This house contains all EnergyStar appliances, including the refrigerator, washer, dryer, etc.) EnergyStar is a great company that creates energy efficient products. They have appliances that are 9-10% more efficient than models at the minimum efficiency standard.


I would use LED light bulbs. This is because they are more energy efficient and eco-friendly. They use less energy than a regular conventional light bulb. They will last longer and you won't have to buy them as often. These light bulb are a perfect choice because they benefit both you and the environment.

The Study of the Universe

Space Techonology

One type of technology that can be found in this home are cordless vacuums. For the Apollo space mission, NASA needed a portable drill that could take samples from under the lunar surface. Black & Decker created a computer program that could optimize the drill's motor design. This program eventually led to the development of small cordless vacuums often used around homes.

Another type of technology are the homes solar panels. The ERAST Alliance needed to develop an aircraft that could fly for days at a time at high altitudes. This required advanced solar power sources that would not add weight (solar panels used on homes).
