Off the Shelves – News from the LRC
We are pleased to welcome author Kate Beaton on September 21st. Kate will speak to our full-day kindergarten, as well as 1st and 2nd grade students. All Prairie Point families are welcome to purchase her book, King Baby (see order form below).
We will have our annual Pumpkin Gallery in the LRC in October. Students are invited to decorate a pumpkin (the fake/decorator type; sorry, no real pumpkins please) to represent a favorite book character and bring it to the library October 3rd or later to display in our gallery. (See example below). Have fun, and be creative!
Our Fall Book Fair will be held the last full week of October. More information will be sent home with students.
Thank you to these students who donated books to our library in celebration of their birthdays: Alex Taylor and Olivia Blaszynski.

Home & School President's Letter
Dear Parents and Prairie Point Staff,
Happy September!! The Home and School Board is very excited to start the year and invites all of you to join in the fun.
For those of you new to the school, Home and School is an organization that works very closely with the Prairie Point Staff and Prairie Point Families to ensure that our children have the best experiences in school. We support, plan and execute many events throughout the school year.
We held our first Home and School meeting of the year, on Sept. 1st. We hosted a parent social and had a very informal discussion of what Home and School is all about. We thank those who attended.
We kicked off our annual Panther Fitness Challenge – this year with an Olympic theme – yesterday, September 9th. The Challenge will end on September 30th with a full day of fun, exercise and excitement! This is our one big fundraiser for Prairie Point. We are able to support the school, the staff and all students with the money we raise. And 100% of everything raised comes back to the school!!
Next Tuesday is Jimmy John’s night. SD308 is challenging all schools with a food drive starting Sept. 19th. Please check your Thursday folders and watch for announcements on Facebook and on our Marquee for more information.
Last, I encourage you to fully embrace the moment and urge you to take the time from your busy schedule to become familiar with all there is to offer in Home and School by attending the meetings and volunteering at the various events conducted throughout the year! It is a great place to meet new friends and volunteer at your child’s school. Our kids love it when we participate!!!!
Thank you for your time and support!!

NUT ALLERGY ALERT!
An important message from your building nurse
September 9, 2016
Dear Parents,
We have many students in our school with allergies to Peanuts/TreeNuts. An accidental contact with a nut of any kind, even tiny amounts, can cause a severe allergic reaction and death. A nut allergy for children is a very serious issue. If there is a child in your child’s classroom with a nut allergy, an informational letter went home last week.
Although most children “outgrow” some of their allergies, allergies to nuts may be life-long. They can cause reactions ranging from itching or swelling of the lips, tongue or mouth, to life-threatening shortness of breath and a drop in blood pressure.
Avoidance, education, awareness and preparedness are the four keys to management of a nut allergy. This means not coming into contact with anything that has even minute traces of nuts or nut butter. Nuts may be concealed in processed and baked foods. Examples include baked goods, candy, cereals, chili, cookies, dips, egg rolls, ice cream and spaghetti sauces.
How can a parent help keep all students in our school safe? While a suggested list of safe snacks was sent home to many students at the start of the year, you are not limited to those items. However, we ask that a concerted effort be made to send snacks to school that do not contain nuts. Please check the ingredients on any snack before sending it to school with your child.
Students are encouraged to wash their hands after eating lunch, and particularly after they have eaten any peanut product. Contact me if you have any questions.
Sincerely yours,
Dominique Acuff RN, BSN
