HOLY ROSARY NEWSLETTER
Term 2 Week 9 - 26 June 2020
FROM GEORDIE:
As the penultimate week of term comes to a close, we can all look forward to the next round of restrictions being lifted as of tonight. In particular, the ability to have 30K fans at a footy match is exciting. With footy returning to WA there are certainly many things to look forward to. Today has been awesome, the weather turned it on for us down at Jackadder and there was a really fun community atmosphere at our Cross Country Carnival! It was great to hear about all the extra effort and training that many of our students did in the lead up and I was really impressed to see our students doing their best. Big thanks to Rob for making it all possible! He literally hounded me for weeks because he wanted it to go ahead so badly!
I would really like to thank everyone who took the opportunity to provide us with feedback in the newsletter last week. There were lots of really positive comments as well as some great suggestions for us moving forward. Already the feedback about PP drop off and pick up has been put into action and I thank Justine, Julie and all the other teachers who have been helping to make the Drive-Through as safe and convenient as possible. For those who use this drive-through, you will notice that the lines have now been remarked and are really clear. A BIG thanks to David Prior for sorting this out for us! A reminder that in the afternoon we are back to normal finishing time and kids will be dismissed at 3.05pm. If you are waiting in the drive-through, please do not stop in the signed areas as this is how we get the traffic jam on the bell.
Assemblies, awards and in particular where they are held was also brought up a number of times. When the restrictions allow us, we will trial having our assemblies in the gym. Our first Merit Assembly will be held on Friday in Week 2 of term and we hope that parents will be able to attend. We will provide more details early next term.
A few other ideas that came up were:
benches up near the courts
a sustainability focus
leadership opportunities in upper primary
catching up on missed opportunities
Arts/Drama opportunities.
We will discuss these and a number of these as well as some other interesting suggestions with staff and student leaders and hopefully we will see some of them implemented in the coming semester. A reminder that the new Holy Rosary Key Dates page is attached to this newsletter.
Next week will be the final week at Holy Rosary for Miriam Peake in Year 1. Miriam has been working really hard helping our Year 1C class this year and I sincerely thank her for her efforts. Miriam will be welcoming a new addition to her family next term and we wish her all the very best with many exciting times ahead! In Miriam’s place I would like to welcome Mr Mike Thacker to our Year 1 team. Mike is a really enthusiastic and energetic educator who is excited to be joining us here at Holy Rosary. He is currently finishing his teaching degree and also works with young cricketers as a coach.
Finally, I have really enjoyed the opportunity to get around and see all the exciting things happening inside and outside our classrooms this week. I read a procedure or recipe, taught about fractions and measurement and baked some delicious biscuits in Year 3D. I also spent the afternoon in Year 6 on Monday. It was here that I learnt about Aston’s fishing expedition off the coast of Dunsborough over the long weekend. The pic below is of the Tuna he caught and I have been told that they were able to make some delicious Sashimi while they were down there! This is my absolute FAVOURITE food! Well done Aston.

LIBRARY NEWS
With restrictions lifting, we have lots to look forward to in the library! The Senior Chess Tournament is set to start in Term 3 – year 4, 5 and 6 students can write their names down outside the library until Thursday. Time allowing, the Junior Comp (year 1, 2 and 3) will run afterwards. Week 2, term 3 also sees the return of our Scholastic Book Fair. The book fair is lots of fun and provides our library with so many new FREE books. This year we will open over Wednesday, Thursday and Friday to support social distancing and maximum capacity restrictions. As always, I would love some parent helpers before and after school – please see next week’s newsletter for more info. Students from year 1 upwards are encouraged to borrow books over the holidays – it’s the best time to read and usual rules apply regarding lost or damaged books – just a replacement is requested.

UFO Craft next meeting 14th July 9.30-11.30am
Ten people arrived for our meeting on 24th June bearing 5 more completed rugs. Claudette’s elegant labour of love over the past year, led Miriam’s classy purples, Netta’s colourful Snuggly Ruggly, and Anne P completed a UFO in greens as well as her own knitted squares in muted colours. Fred from St V de P dropped in to give us moral support and for a cuppa with Danny’s scones. Thanks Danny.
We were all energised by the work in hand and chatted happily throughout the morning.
Why not drop in to our meetings on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of July.
