Elizabeth Schools Honor Veterans
Elizabeth Schools expressed gratitude to the veterans and active-duty servicemembers of the community in a number of ways this week.
County Road 13 between Elizabeth High School and Middle School was lined with signs sharing the photos and information of loved ones who have served.
Running Creek Elementary second graders walked to the Elizabeth Veterans Memorial on Wednesday to learn about heroes and the sacrifices they made, and on Veterans Day, the school hosted a parade for veterans connected to the school.
On Friday, Singing Hills Elementary hosted a breakfast for veterans as well as posting information about Star Veterans in the school's hallways.

Gymnastics Team Achieves Three-peat
The Elizabeth High School gymnastics team won its school-record third state 4A championship in a row last week, adding to a string of success over the last several years.
“Sixteen years ago, I'd never ever dreamed that I would be standing here with a seven-time, state-champion program that I'm so lucky to be part of,” said head coach Stacey Folmar.
Senior gymnast Elle Mowbray said, “We are probably the closest team we've ever had. We’re friends at school; we go to each other’s houses after school; and we’ve practiced together for 10 years. And so it’s not just a high school sport and more of a family.”
The team’s motto for this year was: Confidence, Consistency and Commitment. Coach Val Koppinger said, “(Gymnastics is) a year-round commitment. And these girls are completely committed – and so are their parents, which is amazing.”
The team was honored on Tuesday morning as the entire school gathered around the track to cheer them on as they took a lap with their championship banner and trophy. The scene brought tears to the eyes of the coaches.
“Those girls are respected for the students they are, for the people they are – not so much for the gymnasts they are – but now they get to be recognized for that,” Folmar said. “This group of kids right here, and their families, are just stellar in their character. And I think that that has a whole lot to do with the success right now.”

Dodge for Life
The FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) chapter at Elizabeth High School hosted the annual Dodge for Life dodgeball tournament on Nov. 11. The double-elimination tournament featured 13 colorful and creative teams of students, faculty and staff squaring off to raise money for the Kawasaki Kids Foundation.
The foundation provides backpacks filled with toys, games, gift cards and comfort items for families with children diagnosed with Kawasaki Disease, an inflammation of blood vessels which can lead to heart disease in young children and infants.
Mini Cardinals
More than 40 Mini Cardinals joined the Poms Team for their performance at halftime of the final regular season football game on Oct. 29.
The Poms Team also had a busy booth at the Harvest Festival the next day.
Cosplay Creator
Taryn Mitchell, a senior at EHS, completed a showcase on the last weekend of October for the Fan Expo Cosplay Craftsmanship Cup in Denver. Taryn was one of 10 participants chosen out of 600 applicants to showcase a costume made completely by hand. She spent two months creating her costume to look like the hammer-wielding Heisenberg from the Resident Evil video game.
Taryn got to walk across a stage at the Expo and show off all of her hard work in front of thousands of fans.
The costume is now displayed at the EHS library.
