Defining Viola / Cesario
Character Analysis
Viola's Identity
Viola thinks of herself as sensitive. Anything someone says about her can make her feel some type of way. "I am very comptible, even to the least sinister usage" ( i.iv.46-47). This quote supports my thinking because its saying the Viola is sensitive to the littlest stuff. If someone says something mean to her, she would feel upset.
Gender
Viola is forced to act as her twin brother Sebastian. She experiences a girl being in love with her dressed as a boy. She must have a voice like him, put on a wig and dress like a man. Some benefits Viola had dressed up as a boy so she can find work. This is a benefit because women was not allowed to do the same work as a man. "...-help me conceal my identity, and find me the right disguise so I can look the way I want" (i.ii.10-11). This quote supports my thinking because it is showing how Viola is asking someone to help her hide her real identity. This is so she can work for Duke as his servant.
Perception
Sir Toby Belch views Cesario as a handsome young man. Olivia views him as loving and handsome. But Duke Orsino view him as a enemy because Olivia likes Cesario instead of him. Viola has a different view of herself. She view herself as just a normal servant working. "He is very well- flavored, and he speaks very shrewishly" (i.iv.44-45). This quote is showing how a character views Cesario.
Similarities and Differences
Similarly, me and Viola have in common is hiding who we truly are. Viola hides her gender, I hide my real personality. I tend to not act as who I want to so that I would not offend people. A difference is Viola is sensitive and I am not. She get offended about the littlest things if someone says something about her. I am more of a passive and calm person. I do not act in a sensitive way if someone says something about me, I just ignore it.
She's The Man
Identity
Viola thinks of herself as. I think Viola is a girl who does not give up on something she enjoys.
Gender
Viola experiences her gender role by playing on a boys soccer team, hanging with jocks and going to the weight room. She is forced to act as her brother Sebastian. She has talk in a deep voice and mainly act like he has a lot of mistresses to fit in. In the scene when Viola was playing soccer on the field with her team, she got hit in the private part with the soccer ball and she had to act as if she was hurt because usually that would hurt a boys private part (She's The Man).
Perception
Some characters view Viola as uncool and some charming. But she thinks she is cool because tends to give . In a scene, Duke and his friends was at a restaurant and they tried avoiding looking at Viola so she wont come by them. They did this so she wont come by them and talk to them because she is uncool.
Similarities and Differences
Similarly, me and Viola have in common is we play a sport. Viola plays soccer and I do Track & Field. Viola dressed as a boy just to play soccer again because the girls soccer team got cut. Unlike me, If the girls track team got cut, I would not dress as a boy just to join the boys track team.
