Assistant Principal's Message
Dear Oak Hills Families,
We are so grateful to all of the families and volunteers who helped to make our Jog-A-Thon such a success! I am pleased to announce we are very close to meeting our goal. Even before the final packet collection this morning, the PTO informed me we raised $34,500. That is also before factoring in company matches. I just loved watching our sweet community working together to provide this fun event for students that will also do so much to add to the opportunities we can provide here at Oak Hills. Thank you to everyone who supported this fundraiser!
This week was Digital Citizenship week. It reminds me to be thankful for all of the amazing things I can do thanks to technology. I hardly ever get lost anymore because my phone tells me where to go. More importantly, when I can't make it home in time to see if the Yankees are winning, I ask Siri to tell me the score! However, it also reminds me our kids are growing up in a different world from the one I did and we have to safeguard our students in different ways.
At Oak Hills, we take the safety of our students very seriously and are vigilant when our students are on-line. We have many district filters that make it difficult for students to get to inappropriate websites as they are blocked. Additionally, our IT team is ready to support me if I need to investigate any situation involving student use of technology.
Our, Technology Teacher, Mrs. Vallee, has been teaching digital citizenship lessons during her technology classes. During her lessons, she has addressed topics such as:
• What is the internet?
• What is personal information?
• When do you tell an adult?
• How can you be kind on line?
• What are cyber bullies?
• What should you know before you post pictures on-line?
Once the lessons were completed, every student in every class signed a poster that pledged that they would:
• Communicate kindly and responsibly with one and other.
• Protect their own and other’s private information on line.
• Stand up to cyberbullying
• Respect other’s ideas and opinions.
• Give proper credit when they use other’s work.
It's important your children have parental guidance as they use technology at home. Check often to see what your children have access to. Common Sense Media has some really great resources on their website for helping you to talk with your children about many of the issues you may encounter as you navigate the internet now and in future years. Here are some family activities tailored to all different ages that are fun to do together. They are very elementary friendly. You might also find these family tip sheets helpful. The topics covered range from managing screen time to sending inappropriate selfies. Many of these topics may not apply to your student now, but it's good to know what may be coming down the road.
Please feel free to contact me if you should have any additional ideas or suggestions to keep our students safe and responsible users of technology in the classroom.
Warm regards,
Jennifer DeMartino
Thank you for the meals!
We would like to offer a sincere thank you to all of the parents who donated food during conference week. Those days are very long for us and it was so nice to be able to have a delicious meal available in the staff room! The subs and desserts were incredible. We were also so grateful to have the staff room tidied up at the end of the night. Thank you to Linda Bender for taking care of that and for the Dawn dish soap!

WE WANT YOU!
Parents are a great asset to our school. Please help us show off the rich culture of our school community! We invite you to share a special talent with our students in a 10-15 minute showcase on Wednesday, November 29th. Do you play an instrument? Can you present a cultural dance? Do you do something dynamic for a career? Or do you have a different idea? Please share it!! You would be presenting to each grade level between 8am and 1pm. We value you as role models, and know the students would love to learn from you. All presenters will need to complete an application and background check. Please refer to https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/depts/CCI/volunteer-engage for more information.
