Professional Development At Clemens Crossing
I've often times been asked by people outside of education what we do during staff meetings or professional learning days. You would be amazed at all of the learning that often takes place with teachers during that time! This year, our staff started a more focused journey with the implementation of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) in our classrooms. Additionally, we have been looking at Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion as they relate to our work with children, families, and colleagues here at Clemens Crossing Elementary and in the Howard County Public School System.
Earlier this year, we received new Caring School Community resources from Collaborative Classroom. This year, we have explored the new resources with the intention to fully implement the resources during the 2019-2020 school year. As we have looked at the five core competencies of social emotional learning, we quickly discovered that our school is doing A LOT in regards to SEL and supporting students. Our goal is to build upon a strong foundation and naturally embed SEL in classroom activities, small group discussions, and other learning opportunities for students. As we continue to plan for next year, we will build on our foundation.
In regards to our work with Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, we started to do work around discovering what makes identity and how our experiences have influenced us. We also explored how our experiences have played a role in unconscious biases that may occur in our everyday world as a result of media, upbringing, and many other factors.
Our goal is to increase our individual and collective capacity to support learning for ALL students through SEL and practices that are inclusionary. We want to make sure that children have equitable access to programming and services, and that families and staff have the opportunity to be involved and feel welcomed. We will continue this important work to help reach our school mission and vision!

Career Day 2019 – Volunteers needed!
Clemens Crossing Career Day is Wednesday, June 5, 2019. Would you like to spark an interest in the next generation? Do you have a job that you like to talk about? Can you spare an hour or two?
We invite you to be part of this exciting day! We are in need of parents to speak to students in Grades 3-5 about their careers. Presenters will speak to individual classes during 30-minute blocks. You may sign up for as many or as few blocks as you like. Our goal is to expose students to a variety of occupations. Whether your child is participating or not, we would love to have you! Please consider sharing your experiences and helping the children to begin thinking about the world of work. If you would like more information, please email our School Counselor, Ann Rogers at ann_rogers@hcpss.org.
