Literacy DVD Project Tapings

The Literacy DVD project has been a long treasured keepsake, chronicling Vernfield student literacy learning from early elementary through fifth grade.

With your permission, children are recorded reading a short passage from their favorite book and answering several questions about the book and activities they have enjoyed throughout the school year. (If your child cannot read yet, we will have them talk about their favorite book instead!) At the end of fifth grade a “Literacy DVD” will be made with all of the recordings from the years past and given to your child.

You need only give permission once, so permission slips will be sent home for NEW participants only and are due on February 14.

We need volunteers to make this project successful! If you can help with recording (during the school day), or have any other questions, see the sign ups with links below or contact Nora Shurtz at

Recordings for fifth grade students will be from January 22 through January 25. Anyone wishing to volunteer to help with recordings can sign up here.

Recordings for fourth grade students will be from February 4 through February 8. Anyone wishing to volunteer to help with recordings can sign up here.

Prime Time Reading - Travel Through Time with Reading

Prime Time Reading is an evening of activities centered around the fun and adventure of reading for students in Kindergarten through 2nd grade.

This year, the event is scheduled for February 8 from 6 - 8 pm. The theme is “Travel through time with reading.”

Flyers will be going home with students on Tuesday. The sign up for parent volunteers will be posted next week.

Valentine Social

The Valentine Day Social will be held on Friday, February 14th from 2 - 3 pm. Anyone interested in helping out can contact Colleen Kurtz at and she will put you in contact with the coordinator for your child's classroom.

A reminder to parents already involved in the planning that the deadline for ordering pretzels for the Social is January 30th.

HSA Elections

HSA elections will be held at the March 12th meeting. There are two HSA Board positions up for election this year - 2nd Vice President (Communications) and 1st Treasurer. These positions would serve for 24 months beginning the June Executive Committee meeting and continue through the 2019-2020 and the 2020-2021 school years.

Descriptions of the duties for each position can be found in the HSA bylaws which you can find here.

We will be presenting the names of the nominees at the February HSA meeting. Deadline for nominations is Thursday, February 7.

If you would like to be nominated for one of the open positions or have any questions about the duties or requirements of serving on the Board, please contact Lisa Hovind at or any of the current Board members.
