Mrs. Loppnow's News & Notes
Week of April 2, 2018
A Note from Mrs. Loppnow:
Hello Parents!
First of all, I apologize for the delay in this message. I have had a bit of a rough time managing my liver disorder over the last few months. Unfortunately, the liver controls WAY more than I ever knew and has affected me in numerous ways. I apologize for my absences lately and want you to know, I do everything in my power to be here each and every day! I truly appreciate your patience and understanding.
I hope you all enjoyed your Spring Break! I had a nice trip to Texas and saw the Bluebonnets in full bloom, not to mention a tour of Austin, Waco, San Antonio, and South Padre Island. It was a whirlwind week with great friends!
It's hard to believe we are now looking at planning for end-of-year activities. I say this every year, but I truly don't know where our time has gone! As I look back over my News & Notes from the year, it is evident how much the kids have each grown. I am so proud of each and every one and can't wait to see them "strut their stuff" on the upcoming MCA's!
Now, we wait patiently for Spring to REALLY show up in Minnesota!
***Field trip permission slips are coming home today. Please try to return them, with a check made to Red Rock Elementary by THIS Thursday or Friday. Thank you for your quick response.***
Enjoy your week!

The CARNIVAL is APPROACHING!
In addition, the PTO needs your donations of King size candy bars and 1 or 2 liter bottles of pop for the carnival pop toss and candy bar walk. These events are a huge hit with our kiddos at the carnival so your donations are essential to make it happen! Drop off your donations to the main office. We would like to have as many of these supplies as possible donated before spring break so we can ensure we will be able to run the games at the carnival on May 4!
A Peek into this week and next!
Writer's Workshop: In honor of National Poetry Month, the students began their study of poetry. We began with some guided imagery to spark our imaginations and get into "creative mode". We then studied the poem "frame" of The Red Wheelbarrow by William Carlos Williams and discovered it is much like the MadLibs activities we all love so much! (See below for a few examples of OUR versions of this poem.)
Content: It's that time of year when we do "double doses" of math to hit all of our standards! We will be spending time with MONEY and will focus on making change with the fewest possible coins. Try practicing at home with your child!
Reader's Workshop: We will continue our work with paired texts focusing on comparing and contrasting the texts and finding the message of both. This can sometimes be a tough skill when students are used to reading only one passage at a time! We all know, however, that reading multiple texts and points of view, help us deepen our understanding around a topic. Continue to encourage daily reading at home and don't be afraid to pull out newspapers and magazines to look for current topics to explore!
