News you can use from Dena'ina Elementary School
Principal Post
Dear Dena'ina Families,
The second quarter of school is underway and the holiday season is upon us. Hopefully you had a chance to see us during conferences so we could share the good work your child is doing each day. That good work is a part of your child's journey through elementary school, a vastly different experience than most of us had.
Technology, namely social media, has forever changed life as we know it. Those of us who are over a certain age didn't grow up with cell phones at our fingertips and apps for everything. Check out this video with the latest (shocking!) statistics. Although social media can be overwhelming, it can also help us share information with you quickly. The number one concern we hear is about communication. We can send flyers, newsletters, texts, emails and do mass phone calls and we still won't reach everyone. Perhaps social media will help people feel more informed about school.
As a newer school, we are still building our school and community culture; culture isn't built in a day or even a year. We want to share with you and others our story, who we are, what our vision is and why we love our school. You can expect to see more posts on our Facebook page, tweets on our Twitter account and photos on Instagram. Any child that has a 'Do Not Publish' restriction will be exempted from any of these posts; these parents will receive an email explaining the restriction with directions for how to lift it if they wish.
Parent input is important in everything we do and we want to hear from you. Please let us know the good things as well as concerns. I welcome your thoughts because you are our partner in your child's education!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Everett

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you determine indoor recess?
Indoor recess can be called for a variety of reasons; temperatures that are -10 degrees or less (wind chill is a factor), pouring rain, moose, icy conditions, etc. We err on the side of letting kids go out. This week we called indoor recess because the asphalt and all the equipment was covered in ice, which would be hazardous. Fresh air and exercise is good for us and we remind kids often to dress for the weather. There is a small amount of gear that we can loan out too if a child forgets something.
During indoor recess, we try to get kids into the gym for at least 15 minutes so they can burn off some energy. There are two grade levels at recess at the same time, so one grade level is in the gym, the other is in the commons area playing board games. After 15 minutes they switch so that each grade level gets some activity time.
