Breaking News from our classroom

Dear Parents,

Students took their first science and social studies quizzes last week on Quia. This is an online testing site. It was pretty bumpy, being the first time. The format is new to students. This week we are working on reviewing the content that students seemed to struggle with. We will be retesting next Tuesday. I will be sending home this Thursday information about how you can login as a parent. If you want to see test scores before then you can have your child login and show you the test scores. Please keep in mind that we are retaking the quizzes and that the computer shows the scores in % form which is very different from the grading that the school district uses. Also, please keep in mind that these are only quizzes and that students are working on other items in class to show their knowledge of content. Please let me know if you have any questions.

I would like to start scheduling conferences for this nine weeks. I am open for meeting on Monday and Wednesday from 3-3:30pm and on Thursday from 3:00-4:30pm most days. Please contact me with a date and time that we could meet. If these times do not work for your schedule, please send me what works for you and I will try to arrange something.

Also, I would like to have a fall cookout on a Sat in Oct. from 2-4pm for the students and parents. If you would be able to come please let me know if there is a particular Sat that works best for you and your family.

This week students will begin working on their POW math problem of the week. Each night they will have to complete a part of the problem. It is due to me on Friday. We have worked on one together as a class, so they have the steps written in their POW notebook to use as an example.

Weekly Studies

We are continuing to study rocks and minerals in science. We will begin studying soil next week. We will retake our science quizzes on Quia next Tuesday. Students should study their landform notes to prepare for these quizzes.

We are continuing to study SC regions this week in social studies. We will begin studying Native Americans later this week and into next week. We will retake our social studies quizzes next Tuesday. Students should study their "Journey through South Carolina" booklet that we are making this week.

In math this week, we are working on adding whole numbers, grouping in tens, and rounding. Students will be taking a place value test this week on Friday. We have been working on place value for several weeks. Students will have to tell the place and value of a digit. They will have to write word form, standard form, and expanded form for a given number.

We are working on folktales during reading and personal stories during writing. Students will begin meeting with me this week for word study.
