Stevens Scribbles

Let me start by saying this in not the welcome back I was looking forward to. Let me also say that I am also not here to change anyone's viewpoint, but rather offer solutions to the situation we currently face.

This newsletter is LONG and contains an enormous amount of information. Information that has previously been sent can be found at the end of the newsletter, while newer information is at the beginning. Much of the information was written under the assumption of a full face-to-face return, so I spent yesterday and today revising and will be sending another update in the upcoming weeks, however, I can not stress the importance of coming to schedule pick-up. The student's schedule is the schedule of hours/classes we will use for face-to-face and online learning.

This is still a great opportunity to prepare the student for the week of Sept 8 and then our return in October whatever that may look like, from walking our building to seeing our counselors. With that said, we are not going to utilize the lockers unless students want to put supplies to keep here in them the first week of Sept 8, so I am hopeful this will assist to alleviate the "opening the locker fear" that many 6th graders face.

To explain the week of September 8, we have divided the students alphabetically to have approximately 1/4 of the students present in school Tuesday-Friday (see Mark Your Calendar for Schedule). This will allow teachers to make connections with small groups and assist students signing into technology and getting a good grasp of what is expected in the upcoming virtual learning weeks.

Let me assure you that the distance learning that was experienced in the spring will not be what you will experience this month. Students will be expected to proceed in curriculum and teachers will expect their participation in Zooms to sure up concepts. The amount of work on the Google Classroom will be equivalent to being in class and may be completed at anytime throughout the week. The students will have a mentor teacher, along with the other classroom teachers, to assist and communicate with directly to ensure they are successful. Administration and teachers have put in countless hours and will continue through the next weeks to ensure they are prepared to guide students through the curriculum in the most efficient way while creating and maintaining a caring atmosphere.

Please be sure to download the FAQ to see many building policies/procedures that will be in effect during face-to-face instruction.

Again, not the start I was hoping for, however, I am extremely proud of the entire staff for their responsiveness and can not wait to see the students!

Student Daily Self-Screening

PLEASE be aware that you must self-screen students daily prior to sending to school.

Should the student exhibit any of the COVID-19 symptoms while at the school they will be isolated and parents must come pick up the student and follow the procedures laid out in the LCS COVID-19 Preparedness & Response Student Procedures. ********

Rolland-Warner FAQ

Please see the attached document for specific procedures and changes in the building for the upcoming school year, such as lunch and how the teacher's classrooms will be set up.

Masks Required

Masks are required for Staff and Students unless medical documentation is provided prior to student arriving at school.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND:

  • Try wearing the mask at home first! Some masks are just more comfortable than others, have the students try the masks at home. The first day is going to be a long day and you don't want to wear a mask that hurts your ears all day!
  • Sending multiple masks. As the masks get moist from our breathing, the student may feel much better with a new dry mask!
  • Send facial wipes in student's backpack. Even with our air conditioning, wearing a mask will cause student's to sweat. Certainly not the end of the world, however, using a facial wipe in the middle of the day maybe just what the student needs to feel fresh again.

Washing Your Hands

Please encourage and remind students to wash hands or use hand sanitizer! Follow the below CDC procedures.

Follow Five Steps to Wash Your Hands the Right Way

Washing your hands is easy, and it’s one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs. Clean hands can stop germs from spreading from one person to another and throughout an entire community—from your home and workplace to childcare facilities and hospitals.

Follow these five steps every time.

  1. Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap.
  2. Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
  3. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice.
  4. Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.
  5. Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.

PowerSchool Sign-Up

I cannot stress the importance of not only you signing up as a parent, but having your child sign up on their cell phone or device, to keep track of their progress! The ownership this allows them is EXTREMELY powerful!

If you have already created a PowerSchool account, please use the same username and password as you have in the past.

If you have not yet created an account:

  • Make sure you have an access code and password (provided by the district) for each child. If you do not, you can request them from the building secretaries rshrontz@lapeerschools.org or Rochelle Fritz at rfritz@lapeerschools.org.
  • Make sure you go into the "Create an Account" section and create a new account and fill out all information in the online form. Where it says "Desired User Name", come up with your own username, then enter the password that you want to use (you have to enter it twice). If your username is already taken by somebody else, you can either choose from the suggested names listed or try another username on your own.
  • In the "Link Students to Account" area, type in your student's name, then the “Parent Access” ID and password. You can add additional students that you have access codes for if needed, but for each one make sure you enter the “parent access” ID and password for that student.

If you have problems creating your new account, please email Rochelle Fritz at rfritz@lapeerschools.org or Renee Shrontz, building secretary, rshrontz@lapeerschools.org.

Please click this link for PowerSchool Mobile how-to video. You will need the District Code "SGMG" and your parent (or child's for them to add to their phone) access id, which can be found on your child's schedule or by emailing the office.

Busing

The district will continue to provide busing for students, however, with the current conditions any person that has the ability to transport their children to school without utlizing busing is encouraged to do so. The earliest a student (that doesn't have PLTW/Zero Hour) can be dropped off is 9 am, however, class does not start until 9:24 am and arrival closer to that time would alleviate the traffic in the hallways!

Also please note that all MS buses will have assigned seats.

A discussion on beginning of the year craziness wouldn’t be complete without mention of late buses the first week or so. When I say late buses, I mean LATE. Please do not be surprised if your child doesn’t get off the bus until close to 6pm the first few days of school or is late arriving in the morning. The main reason this happens is RW is the final bus run of the day. This means the elementary schools, the other middle school, and the high school all have to complete their bus runs before we even start ours. For the safety of the students, each of these bus runs takes longer the first few days because we want to ensure every student is accounted for and is getting picked up and dropped off safely. If you have three different bus runs and they each get behind just a little bit, the last bus run (Rolland-Warner’s) ends up being VERY late. Please do not be alarmed but know this is normal. If you have appointments or other engagements after school, please plan accordingly. This may include picking your child up from school on those days to make sure you are getting there on time. These delays dissipate a little bit more each day until finally after about a week we’re running close to the normal schedule.

Drop Off and Pickup

I would be remiss if I mentioned school safety and did not promote careful driving and patience in our drop-off and pickup loop. The Transportation Research Board reports that 25,000 children are injured every year in school zone accidents. What this means is, while we place tremendous emphasis on building safety in many areas, students are probably much more likely to be injured or killed in the parking lot or within a quarter mile of the school. While no school has a perfect pickup and drop off routine, RW’s is very efficient because we have such a nice big parking lot and long loop for cars on the East side of the building (off of Demille). Please wait patiently in the line to pick students up and drive very cautiously as you move through. Also, all RW parents MUST use the lot off of Demille and NOT the Kids & Company lot for drop-off and pickup. Please refer to the map below for specifics on the procedures. Remember drop-off time in the morning is NO EARLIER than 9 AM and with social distancing requirements we request you drop off children as close to start time of 9:24 AM as possible (remember to give time for walking to class and breakfast if desired).

Big picture

Water Bottles

Due to restrictions placed on us, drinking fountains are closed so we encourage students to bring multiple insulated water bottles!

Student Handbook Notes

Medication – All medication, unless emergency inhaler, etc., must be kept in office. Please be sure to stop in to fill out the appropriate forms!

Carrying Backpacks - The Handbook states that students are not allowed to carry backpacks, however, due to the pandemic, we are allowing students to carry string back packs this year only to assist with students making minimal trips to lockers.

New Staff

We welcome to RW:

  • Mrs. Breanne Jostock - our new art teacher. She comes to us with a wealth of experience at the MS level!
  • Mrs. Molly Henderson - our new YR math teacher. Molly joins us with a myriad of math experiences from the east coast!

These individuals will strengthen our team at RW and we look forward to the year with both of these great additions to our staff!

NWEA Testing

Typically starting the second week, students will be starting the fall session of NWEA Testing (also referred to as MAPs). This testing is extremely important as this will determine placement of students for second semester intervention classes. New state mandates require schools to provide interventions for students and we use this test as one of the methods to determine whom will be receiving intervention classes which is run during elective times. Please make sure your students put forth their best efforts!

NWEA will be given remotely should the region go into Phase 3.

Mark Your Calendars!

The new school year is just around the corner. Please make a note of all the following important dates that may have been altered on your calendars to get the new school year off to a great start, however, remember these dates and times are subject to change due to the pandemic.

COVID-19 Updates

District Preparedness Plan

Every district in the state of Michigan, through executive orders, have been directed to publish Preparedness Plans. Lapeer Community Schools has multiple as directed and can be found here for your review: LCS District Preparedness Plan

Instructional Plan Basics

Guidance from the “MI Safe Schools Return to School Roadmap” provides required and strongly recommended safety protocols to keep school communities safe based on the status of the coronavirus. This document lays out the guidelines for schools reopening based on the current phase of reopening the State is in. The most likely scenarios are that we will be in Phase 4 (the phase we are currently in) or Phase 3. The difference between the two phases is a big one though. Phase 4 allows for in-person instruction while Phase 3 allows for only online instruction. Because these are the most likely scenarios, this newsletter will focus only on the instructional plan for these two phases.

Phase 4 Instructional Plan (In-person Instruction)

Under the Phase 4 instructional plan, students will attend school at Rolland-Warner 6/7 Campus with the following changes and safety precautions in place which adhere to the requirements and recommendations laid out in the MI Safe Schools Return to School Roadmap. In an effort to be succinct in this newsletter, only the main precautions will be listed. Please refer to the FAQ posted on the LCS website for more detailed information. You can find that here: Lapeer Community Schools Return to School Roadmap FAQ

In the upcoming weeks, we will be putting out a FAQ specific to Rolland-Warner that will have more of the building specifics.

  • All students and staff are required to wear facial coverings (required by MI Safe Schools Return to School Roadmap).
  • Additional cleaning protocols will be in place
  • Additional hand sanitizer will be available
  • Adjustments to lunch schedules will be made to promote social distancing and adhere to requirements
  • Adjustments to all seating and procedures to ensure social distancing is accomplished as much as possible

Phase 3 Instructional Plan (Online Instruction)

The online instructional plan that was implemented in April of last school year was created in a very short amount of time with limited training for students, staff, and parents. While I strongly feel we put together a high quality instructional program in limited time under difficult circumstances, there was certainly room for improvement. Because we have had more time to prepare, our online instructional plan for the 2020-2021 school year (if needed) will be much more rigorous and robust. We are currently working on finalizing the details of this plan. In the event the State is moved into Phase 3, the particulars of the online instructional plan will be communicated to families at that time.

Band Help!

If you have the ability we would appreciate the assistance!

Attention crafters and those with sewing skills! We are looking for donations of masks/facial coverings and musical instrument masks/coverings (see link below for patterns) for students who will be returning for Face-to Face instruction. Any number of masks that can be provided will be deeply appreciated. Thank you for your support in helping students return to school and participate in the programs they love. Please contact Mrs. Fenner with any questions at lfenner@lapeerschools.org.

Rolland-Warner PAC Meetings

We have completed all our PAC meetings for the year. I appreciate the parents who volunteered their time to visit with me monthly and discuss various aspects of the school. I use these PAC meetings not just to share information and explain programs at Rolland-Warner, but also to get feedback from parents on areas that may be lacking. These meetings really help me keep my finger on the pulse of our families (which really are our customers). For those parents who have a student at RW next year, I look forward to seeing you in September for another round of PAC meetings (with Zoom options to increase one's ability to attend), and for those moving on to Zemmer I encourage you to join Dr. Stanton for PAC meetings there!

Here is a list of the RW PAC meetings for the 20/21 school year that will occur close to the third Friday of the month at 9:30 am-10:30 am in the Rolland-Warner conference room and/or Zoom, so you can put on your calendar: Sept. 18, Oct. 16, Nov. 13, Dec. 18, Jan. 22, Feb. 26, Mar. 19, Apr. 16, and May 21.

Wyatt Stevens is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.
