SEL News from the desk of Amy Argubright
Hello! Each week, the SEL newsletter focuses on a different SEL competency and includes valuable resources and activities that you can use to promote well-being at home or in the classroom. This week's topic is Self-Management and Stress Management. Self-Management is defined by the CASEL website as the “ability to manage one's emotions, thoughts, and behaviors effectively in different situations and achieve goals and aspirations." In the short term, stress can push a child to practice for her piano recital or inspire a teen to study when he’d rather be out with friends, but chronic stress is different. Left unchecked, long-term stress can contribute to a long list of physical and mental health problems.
I am happy to be here to support the students, staff, and families of CMS! Have a great week!

Homecoming week was fun, and students showed tons of spirit.
We are implementing E-Hall Pass which allows us to monitor students in the hall.
Creating A Culture of Curiosity
Many students don’t feel comfortable being curious at school. Spend some time creating a culture of curiosity... go through the links below with your child and ask them two questions:
- What do you notice? - Psst. Most people rush (or skip) this step. Give kids lots of time to notice things. Noticing is a pre-req. You cannot wonder if you haven't spent enough time noticing first.
- What do you wonder?
- It’s Pumpktris - a fully playable game of Tetris embedded into a pumpkin. And, yes, the stem is the controller.
- Incredible pumpkin arrangements at the Great Jack O’Lantern blaze, a 25-night-long event in New York. Here's the event's official page.
- Another amazing dinosaur costume. Thanks to Katy for the link!
- Action-figure sculptor Ray Villafane takes a break to carve some highly intricate Jack-o’-lanterns.
- Dmitri has broken not one, but two pumpkin boat records!
- Just in time for Halloween, a Lego candy launcher! Listen to Jason Allemann’s incredible explanation of how each part of his apparatus works.
- And (goodness gracious I almost forgot!) those delightful mundane Halloween costumes from Japan. 2021's entries were fantastic. Love to see how cleverly masks were incorporated!
Happy Halloween!
