ELA and Math Common Core Resources for Parents
The National PTA has developed a Parents’ Guide to Student Success (English and Spanish versions) in response to the Common Core State Standards in English language arts and mathematics. Created by teachers, parents, education experts, and others from across the country, the Common Core standards provide clear, consistent expectations for what students should be learning at each grade in order to be prepared for college and career.

Health Room
With seasonal changes approaching, colds and allergies will be present. Students taking medication must have written permission from the parent. Parents need to bring medication to the Health Office and complete a medication form. This medication has to be administered by the school nurse. Students may not keep medication, including cough drops, in the classroom with them. Prescription medication may only be given if the medication comes to school in the prescription bottle.

Operation Take Flight
M. C. Riley Early Childhood Center will be holding an orientation meeting for Operation Take Flight on Thursday, October10th at 4:00 pm in the Early Childhood Center Media Room. They are currently seeking volunteers to participate in the program.
Operation Take Flight is a tutoring program for kindergarten students at M. C. Riley Early Childhood Center. The program is designed for students who need extra help catching up on the basics. Volunteers are needed to work 20 or 45 minutes at a time, one day a week, Monday through Friday. During that time, each volunteer will have the opportunity to work with either one or two students. Volunteers may tutor anytime between 8:30 am and 3:00 p.m.
During the tutoring sessions, students will need help with learning to recognize letters and sounds. Anyone interested in helping should call
Kathy Wipper at 707-0800.
Rotary Readers and Mentors Needed
M. C. Riley Elementary and Early Childhood Center are seeking volunteers for our Rotary Reader and Mentoring Programs.
The Rotary Reader program helps to encourage the love of reading through a caring, mentoring program. Volunteers are needed to read on a weekly basis with individual students at the school. The Mentoring Program helps a child increase their self-esteem and academic achievement through providing a positive influence on the student’s development.
Anyone interested in participating in either program should call Carol Walters, School Counselor, at 706-8345.
School Improvement Council
School Improvement Councils (SICs) serve the school principal and faculty in an advisory role, bringing together parents, educators, students and community stakeholders to collaborate on the improvement of their local schools. Over 17,000 volunteers serve on SIC’s in South Carolina.
For more information, please call the M. C. Riley school office at 706-8300.
