Elementary/Intermediate Spring 2018
HELLO COLOMA SCHOOL COMMUNITY!
Mrs. Ickes
It is hard to believe we are about to begin the fourth marking period of the school year! We have been learning a lot about technology so far this year! Students at the Elementary are either currently working on coding or will be starting this next quarter. We have also been working on our typing skills, learning how to use Google Slides, and discovering how the computer can help us get better at reading and math. At the Intermediate students have been working hard on their typing skills, trying out animation with Google Slides, and learning more about internet safety.
Our Technology Class webpage, ickestech.weebly.com, has grown full of links for all sorts of games and activities to help students develop their academic and problem solving skills. Students can visit our site at home at any time. There is also a Parent Resource page with links for helping your child grow their math and literacy skills.
Mrs. Kirksey
This spring will be filled with many different opportunities for our Coloma kids to make music!
The second graders are preparing a dinosaur-themed program that includes songs, a poem, instruments, and a retelling of the book Dinosaurumpus! The program will take place on Wednesday, May 23rd, at 2 PM in the Coloma Elementary cafeteria/gymnasium. The kindergarteners and first graders will invite special guests to join them for Invited Music classes in May. The guests will have a chance to see many of the things that their children are learning in music class! Look for invitations in April. The third graders did a fantastic job at their Holiday Favorites concert! We were so proud of them! They are now learning about the families of the orchestra. Fourth graders have just begun their recorder unit, and fifth graders just finished up film projects. The fourth and fifth grade Comet Choir will be putting on a rainbow-themed concert on Tuesday, May 29th, at 6:30 PM in the Coloma High School Auditorium.
If you ever have any questions or concerns about K-5 music here in Coloma, please feel free to contact me at ckirksey@ccs.coloma.org. I look forward to hearing from you! :)
Mr. Selvidge
Spring into the Art Room! Huge thank-you to all the parents that participated in our Original Works fundraiser. The orders are in the mail and will be ready to send home the second week of May. Coloma Elementary/Intermediate also participated in the Elementary Art Show at the Box Factory in St. Joseph. 25 student works were displayed at the gallery during the County wide show.
The classes at both buildings have been having a great time during our late start days working through the drawing lessons on Kids Art Hub. It's a free series hosted on You Tube, and the students can work on these lessons at home or during the summer too. There is a link on our web page.
Before the end of the year look for more amazing drawings coming home and maybe a few sculpture and fiber arts projects!
Mr. Veine
This year has been so much fun. Our physical education classes have accomplished a lot so far this year. During the winter months we raised over $2700.00 for the American Heart Association through our Jump Rope for Heart activities in physical education classes at CES. We will have wrapped up our tumbling unit by the end of the third quarter at both buildings, which focused on strength, flexibility, and balance. In the fourth marking period we will complete a unit on basketball. Student focus will be on dribbling, passing, and shooting with proper form. Communication, teamwork, and sportsmanship will be concepts we discuss and model in class activities. We will focus on soccer skills like dribbling, passing, and proper shooting (kicking) throughout both Elementary. We will wrap up the year with field day. CES will have field day on Wednesday, June 6th. CIS will have their field day on Thursday, June 7th. Our rain out day will be Friday, June 8th.
