US Advisory & Counseling Newsletter
6th May, 2022
Dear Students,
Grade 9 and 10 students took the opportunity in April to catch up on their different Community Actions Projects (CAP) in Advisory. We did a project "Check-In" to determine what was accomplished up to this point and to figure out the next steps as well as the challenges and obstacles being faced and the need to address them.
On the other hand, students in Grade 11 continued their research on Career Options based on their interests as well as received group College Counseling sessions from their College Counselors.
We also enjoyed our week of Spring Break, celebrated our Seniors during our final assembly with them, received individual and group academic support and counseling for the subject selection process and all students ended this months Advisory inputting their chosen subjects into PowerSchool.
As we go into May we are looking forward to the roll-out of the various CAP projects. You can get a sneak peek of one of them below.
Enjoy this month's edition!

Please Bring In All Your Non-Perishable Foods to School From this Wednesday, May 11th. There will be boxes to put them in at the end of the US Hallway and in other locations where Posters and boxes will be placed.
Maria, Carmen and Sofie will be doing a Food Run and Bake Sale for their Advisory Project. Their plan is to collect non-perishable food in the Food Run and take it to El Banco de Alimentos in Madrid.
With the money they will collect from the Bake Sale, they will buy more food to bring to El Banco de Alimentos. This is an opportunity for us all to contribute and help our Community as much as possible.

Study Skills
The Pomodoro Method
Otherwise known as the tomato timer, is another useful study tip for students. It was developed by an Italian who had a hard time focusing on his assignments.
So, he decided to commit to just 10 minutes of study time and found a Pomodoro (tomato in Italian) shaped kitchen timer and thus, the Pomodoro technique was born. Here’s what you need to know:
- Get a timer. Here is one. You can also use different ones on YouTube.
- Set your timer for 25 minutes, and focus on a single task until the timer rings.
- Then enjoy a five-minute break.
- After four Pomodoros, take a longer 15-30 minute break.
Career Guidance
If you are good with numbers, and/or have an interest in understanding the inner workings and communication tactics of large, global companies, then a career in International Business may be worth exploring.
The International Business Major is an interdisciplinary major that covers Business, Economics and Global Politics among many others.
Studying International Business prepares you for entry and start positions in management, finance or marketing at international companies, entrepreneurial start-ups and innovative enterprises.
Come to my office if you would like to read any of them!
Book 1 - Ways to Be Me
Book 2 - Do You Know Me?
Book 3 - Can You See Me?
ANOTHER BOOK SUGGESTION!
Ms. Brick & Mr. Dempsey recommend THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME by Mark Haddon
It's a very funny and engaging book. The protagonist Christopher is fifteen and Neurodivergent (Asperger's Syndrome). We have it in our Learning Commons so you can ask Ms. Keating for it. You can also get it here!
