June 2nd Grade News
Library Media
Second graders are spending the end of their year in library participating in various reading, makerspace, and technology centers. Students are doing a great job with the new routine and are enjoying having the variety of activities. Activities have including coding, listening to stories on the iPad, using drawing or look and find books, and book exploration.
Summer reading information will be coming home the week of June 12th but all families should have received a flyer about the book swap. Students are asked to bring in 2-5 gentle used books. At the book swap, which will take place during your child's last library, our hope is to send all students home with 2 books. Please bring your book donations into the library. Thank you!
Also please note that the last day for book check out was Friday May 26th. All books are now due.
Thank you for all your support this year, we can't wait to see everyone back as 3rd graders!

Music
Grade two students finished the year with lots of new music knowledge. They can now read and write rhythms that last one, two, or three beats. They can also read, write, and sing the notes do, re, mi, sol, and la. They are knowledgeable about many new music words (including the most recent, pentatonic scale) and have had lots of practice improvising and composing their own melodies. During the last couple of weeks, students have (or will) reflected on their experiences in music this year and played some review games where they compete to read music patterns in teams.
I would like to thank you all for sharing your wonderful students with me this year! It has been a great privilege to watch their creativity, self-awareness and musical expression grow throughout the year. I look forward to continuing music class with all of your students next year and hope that you have a wonderful summer! Make some time to dance and sing while you are enjoying your time together this summer!

Art
Second graders have been working on a NEW form of creating art. PRINTMAKING!
We spent time discussing where we can find prints, and what we think of when we hear the word “print”. The boys and girls discussed how they know about hand prints and finger prints and printers. But then we discussed how every pair of Nike shoes has the same swoosh symbol, and how every student can have the same book with the same pictures in it. We made connections to the world we live in, and discussed how printmaking makes it so easy for many people to have the same thing, and how long ago, before printmaking, everything had to be written by hand, one letter at a time.
But then, we expanded our knowledge about printmaking when we discussed how ARTISTS like to use printmaking to create COPIES and form masterpieces with them! We learned how to use a piece of string and ink to make ONE print, called a MONOPRINT. Mono-prints are so exciting to make, and artists strive to make them neat and clean, but only get ONE exact copy of something and can never make the same one after that. This time, we made one exact copy of a piece of string! We made three mono-prints altogether as we practiced making them with the string in different positions. We were so surprised at the results of our prints, and created symmetrical abstract designs. That was so messy and fun!
Once our mono-prints were dry, we took markers and mixed media to turn our prints into CREATURES! We are now finishing them up and are creating different “creature features” and a habitat for our creatures to live in. We can’t wait to show you our final masterpieces for the school year!
