This flag is one of many flags used for battle by the Virginia and Tennessee armies in the 1800's.
Civil Rights Movement
African American people who lived in the south were treated very poorly due to segregation laws made by the states. Movements in protest of these unjust laws included the Freedom Summer in Mississippi, the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and the words of Martin Luther King Jr.

- 1994 Southern politician Newt Gingrich held 12 years of GOP control in the house. In 1995 he became speaker of the house up until 1999.
-During the election in 2008, Obama won the votes of 5 southern states, which was unusual for the region that is typically republican voters.
