8th Grade End of Year Events
April is cruising along, we are preparing for our end of year events. As in year's past, we will have an 8th grade dance, as well as, an 8th grade Recognition Night. We do not have a cap and gown ceremony but we do formally recognize the end of 8th grade.
8th grade parents should have received an email with a "Save the Date" for the 8th grade dance. Look for an invitation and ways that parents can help in the coming days. Additionally, our Recognition Night is set for Thursday, May 30 at 7pm at Murphy. This will once again be a ticketed event. Look for more details in the coming weeks.
The Big Serve
For the past few years, various community and faith-based organizations, along with the Village of Plainfield have pooled their resources in a weekend-long celebration of community service. Each year the first weekend in May is The Big Serve.
For the past few years, Murphy has been a service site. The Forgotten Initiative - Journey Bag program and this year the Stress Blanket programs will both run at Murphy. There are many service projects running both May 4th and 5th. If you're interested in serving, additional information and registration can be found at: https://thebigserve.info/
PTO T-Shirt Contest
Once again the PTO is holding a t-shirt design contest. Students may be hand drawn or computer designed and MUST have the words Murphy Junior High in the design somewhere. Entries must be submitted to the office by April 12. The winning designer gets a $25 gift card and a free t-shirt.

AVID Things @ Murphy
While reading To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, students in Mrs. Zaininger's Pre-AP English 1 class shared their different annotating techniques, gave each other feedback on practice in-class literary analysis essays, and developed level 2 and 3 questions for a Socatic Seminar about the novel and issues relating to it.
Students had to research two teams from the tournament and decorate their door to represent each of their schools. Congratulations to Mr. Zaininger and Mrs. Schultz's homerooms for winning the contest. Mrs. Alesia's homeroom were additional winners as Virginia won the tournament.
The students in Ms. Schultz's class were were reviewing for IAR by having math discussions. They encouraged deep thinking and positively challenged each others thoughts by politely asking the question, "What makes you say that?"
Mr. Gerl - Science
Students in Mr. Ger's Science classes built rocket powered ski lifts. The kids designed rocket powered ski lifts, then had the opportunity to redesign their ski lifts for a new purpose, carrying pennies (passengers). They then used this data to write claim, evidence, reasoning statements to conclude the lab.
