January Joy
I hope everyone enjoyed the long winter break and took time to enjoy your family and friends. We are ALL very excited to have our students back in the magical place we call Ladd Acres.
As we head into 2019, it is full steam ahead with learning. Teachers and staff a prepared for a wonderful month of engaging and creating, growing and collaborating. We will review A.S.T.R.O. (Accountable - Safe - Teamwork- Respect-Open minded) expectations in class and in other areas around our school. Included during this time will be a reminder of dismissal expectations. Parents, please remember to pull forward in the pick-up line and to utilize both lanes. As a general reminder, school doors do not open until 7:15 am. Students arriving before then are unsupervised. Your help in ensuring our Astros are safe is greatly appreciated.Thank you for your support and for partnering with us as we work to guarantee safety in our school.
Have a wonderful January!
With warm regards,
Francesca Sinapi

Hillsboro School District Safety Information
The end of 2018 brought several safety incidents to Hillsboro and Beaverton School Districts that involved social media threats. These types of “threats” are almost always found to have no credible basis; however, they are extremely disruptive and upsetting to students, staff, parents, and the broader community. The one-page pdf attached below should help provide information and understanding regarding our process, key terms and communication between school and home.
Update on Wacky W.A.G. Wednesday
Wellness - Art - Garden: Our approach to S.T.E.A.M. at Ladd Acres
Because of the large donations we have received over the last year, we have been able to provide a rich, unique experience for our Astros'. We have worked to incorporate Wellness and STEAM (Science-Technology-Engineering-Art-Math) activities into our Astros' school day. The main way that we do this is through our W.A.G. schedule which takes place on Wednesday's. Using an alternate teaching schedule, our students experience wellness, art and science through garden classes. These classes offer engineering, technology and math aspects within various creative activities. Check out our students in action!Wellness Class with Mrs. Owens

Getting Ready for State Testing
Tips for Families
It is never too early to start getting your student ready for upcoming state testing. As a reminder, students in grades 3-6 test using the Smarter Balance Assessment (SBA, formerly known as SBAC) and all English Language Learners test using the English Language Proficiency Assessment for the 21st Century (ELPA 21).
There are a number of resources on the HSD State Assessment website that you can be helpful for use at home. Please note that parent letters will be coming home soon with more information.
A good idea to help prepare your student is to access the Standards and Assessment section of the HSD public website and/or your school public websites. The link to that section is under the "For Families" tab. The Assessment section contains detailed information about state tests and includes a very useful Smarter Balanced FAQ for parents.
In the months to come, teachers will begin practicing with students by using the practice tests (now named Sample Tests.) If you have questions, please contact your student's teacher or the front office.
After School Enrichment Clubs Update
Our next after-school rotation will run from Jan 14th - March 22nd. Information letters we be sent home this week. Please keep in mind that we do our best to provide students with their top choice for FREE after-school enrichment clubs but we aren't always able to accommodate all requests. If you have any questions, please call the front office.
