From the Principal...
We are well on our way of finishing Mr. Popper's Penguins. I hope you have enjoyed the book as much as my daughter, son, and I have. Only 3 more weeks of reading! Happy Reading!
Educationally Yours,
Casey Hanna
Chapter 6, 7 and 8:
- Very reluctantly, Janie and Bill had to leave Captain Cook and go to school.
Reluctantly-with hesitation, doubt, or dread. The adverb reluctantly comes from the root word reluctant meaning unwilling. Most adverbs end with the suffix -ly.
Can you think of a sentence with the word reluctantly?
- I guess this is what you call the rookery," said Mr. Popper.
Rookery- a heaped arrangement of rough stones with soil between them, planted with rock, plants and especially alpines.
- "It's an Antarctic penguin, Mrs. Callahan."
There are 17 species of penguins some of which are found as far north as the equator. Penguins are categorized into three families: brush-tail, crested, and king/emperor penguins. Of the 17 species only six are found in Antarctica (Adélies, Chinstraps, Emperors, Gentoos, Macaronis, and Rockhoppers).
