What is Civil Engineering?

Civil engineering is a great career in the Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics Career cluster. As a Civil Engineer, one plans, designs, and oversees the building and maintenance of building structures and other objects such as roads, and sewage systems. They also inspect construction sites to make sure the work meets the set regulations and standards. Civil Engineers can work in both the public sector, or the private sector, and are able to travel to each job site. Civil Engineering is a great career!

Duties

  • Analyze long term plans, reports, maps, and other data in order to plan projects
  • Consider cost, environmental factors, and regulations/restrictions when planning
  • Test soil to ensure a strong foundation, and test materials to ensure durability and safety
  • Be able to present ideas to people, and supervise the construction process

Engineering in High School

It is important to set yourself up for success in high school by taking courses related to what you think you want to do. For civil engineering, one should take classes like Intro to Engineering, Principles of Design, or Architectural Drafting. Also important to success as a civil engineer, one must be skilled at math related courses like geometry and calculus. Another course that is important, is Physics. Putting effort in at the high school level is key to success in college which will benefit you in your career.

College and Post Secondary Success

After high school it is imperative that you receive further education in a college setting. In college one should obtain a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or in a related degree: such as, structural engineering, transportation engineering, construction engineering, industrial engineering, or mechanical engineering. Courses necessary to get one of these include statistics, calculus, other math courses, engineering mechanics and systems, fluid dynamics, and physics. In addition to a degree, you need to pass the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam. If you want to advance within a company you should pass the Professional Engineering Exam.

The Job Outlook for civil engineers is bright! Currently there are about 182 job openings per year in Wisconsin for Civil Engineers, and many more at the national level. Along with a great job outlook, the salary for civil engineers is also good at $82,050 for a national average. This is an entry salary, but there is a great opportunity for promotions and higher salaries based on who or what company you work for. There are many perks to being a civil engineer like the great salary, but also as a civil engineer you are able to design things and are able to channel your inner creativity on the job!
